Lots of things: There are a variety of ways to think about this but the easiest is from an anatomical view. Basically anything that pushes the eye forward in the orbit can cause proptosis. Inflammation around the eyes will also generally decrease once the thyroid levels are normal, but if there is a lot of soft tissue buildup behind the eyes, they may continue to bulge out. Old pictures: I would recommend that you dig up some old pictures and look to see if there are signs of proptosis in the past. If there are this may just be something benign that you should monitor for change.
