Red eyes lots of gross stuff in eyes when I wake up, to the point where they are glued shut and they hurt a bit. And are very swollen, what to do?

Heat, age, hygiene: It is most likely dried tears and discharge from blepharitis-gets worse when its hotter, poor lid hygiene and aging. Regular lid hygiene with occaisional topical antibiotics controls it. Warm compress with lid scrubs. 17 mo old w/ severe skeeter syndrome. Bites in the face and eye almost completely swollen shut. Dosed benadryl (diphenhydramine). Best course of action topical and oral?

Oral: Oral benadryl (diphenhydramine) will be best here. For the bites, you can use topical hydrocortisone to help decrease the inflammation (although this will take awhile). Prevention will be the key here - using bug spray and avoiding be outside at dusk might be best. Also, look for signs of infection: if the swelling is warm, painful and very red, please call your doctor. ...Read more

I woke up this morning with my eye puffy/swollen and a bit painful to touch.

Allergies: Allergies cause swollen eyelids. Cold compress can relieve the swelling. Over-the-counter allergy medicine, such as loratidine (claritin) & eyedrops help relieve it. Zaditor (ketotifen) is a good eye drop for itching. If it persists or gets worse go to your doctor. It could also be other problems: infection of the eyelid from blocked sweat ducts on the eyelid margin or if there was injury, an infected lid. ...Read more

How much time does it take for a black eye to become swollen shut?

How much time does it take for a black eye to become swollen shut?

Depends on extent of: Bruising, since that is what a black eye is (ecchymosis) present, as the more it swells under the skin area, the faster it will swell. That is why cool/iced compresses may be helpful on the lids to reduce the swelling. (It's really the eyelid and not the eye that is black for clarification.) Keeping the head elevated helps too. Don't lie flat. Body needs time to resorb swollen tissue's fluids back. ...Read more

I woke up this morning with one eye swollen and itchy. Do you think something bit me?

A bite or particle: Sudden itching and swelling of one eye is almost always caused by contact with an irritant or allergen. If you see evidence of a bite on the skin, or a particle or insect inside your eye, then you know the cause, but more often than not we cannot figure out the cause. A cool or ice compress should help. Allergens include plant or animal particles on the hands, or even new laundry soap. ...Read more

Eyes swollen sunburn: You clearly received a sunburn to the lids and cheeks. If you have blue eyes and very fair skin, you might have gotten an overdose of sunshine if you were out all day especially from 2 to 5 pm and the breezes distracted you from the intensity of the afternoon rays. Makeover gone bad, what should I do? I got a makeover yesterday and my eyes have now swollen shut. What should I do to reduce the swelling and itching...Do I need to go to the emergency room?

Unclear question: What is a makeover? If you are speaking of a session of make-up application (non-surgical intervention), then I would think you are having an allergic reaction to one or more of the substances used in your eye make-over. I would start by taking 25mg of Benadryl (diphenhydramine), it is a very commonly used otc allergy medicine. If it relieves symptoms you probably are just fine. ...Read more
