Different issues: Astigmatism is simply an ovality of the eye which distorts the vision until corrected by glasses or contacts. Optic nerve swelling can be very serious. How did this enter the conversation with your ohthalmologist. You might have some degree of dry eyes as well. Revisit with your eye doctor to sort this out. ...Read more

Sometimes there are indications for this such as diabetes and symptoms indicating problems in the back of the eye. It is not "routine" but should be done once every few years. However, a complete proper eye exam needs to be conducted by an ophthalmologist (an md) who can dilate your eyes and look at the actual lens and the back of the eye (retina).
