A swollen hand can: Be painful, stiff and difficult to care for even in th absence of fracture. Swelling in the hands and fingers and joints makes everyting feel tight and if the fingers are not gently mobilized, stiffness and even contracture can set in. Steroids: Some typical side effects are sensitivity, skin pigmentation changes and thinning of the skin around the injection site. The burning sensation up the arm would not be typical. Many possibilities: At the top of the list would be some form of wrist tendonitis but other possibilities would include latent injury such as unrecognized scaphoid fracture, ligament sprains, occult masses such as ganglia, avn of the lunate (kienbock's), and tfcc injury (though surely not a classic description).
