Is there any difference between mittelschmerz and an ovarian cyst?

Is there any difference between mittelschmerz and an ovarian cyst?

Yes: Mittleschmertz is pain at the time of ovulation that can happen with bursting of the follicle and release of the egg. The follicle is a small normal ovarian cyst. The term ovarian cyst usually refers to a larger or abnormal cyst in the ovary. You can have ovarian cysts without pain/ mittleschmertz and vice versa.

Bilateral cysts: A one cm ovarian cyst is quite small and in the process of ovulation production both ovaries are stimulated and cysts sometimes forms. You are correct that ovaries generally alternate ovulation, but unless you have PCOS most cysts are benign and unilateral.

Do ovarian cysts cause late ovulation?

Do ovarian cysts cause late ovulation?

Ovarian cyst: A cyst (follicle) ruptures each month as you ovulate. Sometimes, the follicle (cyst) that contains the egg that you should ovulate grows bigger and the egg inside stops developing. The cyst may rupture and cause pain or discomfort. If not, you may miss your cycle. As you get older, the changes in your cycle may increase then become more irregular.

Can having an ovarian cyst rupture cause ovulation, or rupture because of ovulation?

Ovarian cyst: Ovarian cysts that tend to rupture are fairly large in size and there is a significant amount of pain associated with that. Note that there can be a small amount of pain associated with ovulation and that is called "mittelschmerz".

If you have an ovarian cyst, will you ovulate from the same ovary on your next cyxle?

Maybe, maybe not: Having an ovarian cyst does not necessarily indicate which ovary you will ovulate from. Many kinds of cysts will not impact ovulation, and so the only way to know which one you ovulate from will be another ultrasound shortly before or at the time of ovulation next cycle.

OK unless XS pain: Small ovarian cysts are associated with ovulating. See your dr. If you have significant pelvic or lower abdominal pain. You probably won't feel like sex if you are in pain anyway.

Can I ovarian cyst cause ovulation twice?

Can I ovarian cyst cause ovulation twice?

Sort of: When you ovulate, an egg can be released from two separate cysts. This often leads to twins! You do not release two eggs from one cyst.

Can an ovarian cyst cause a positive ovulation test?

Can an ovarian cyst cause a positive ovulation test?

No: The only way for an ovarian cyst to do that would be it it was hormonally active and secreting lh hormones. That would be 1 in a million chance or less. So the cyst should not affect that.

Can ovarian cysts cause pain all the time, or just during ovulation?

Ovarian cyst: A cyst (follicle) ruptures each month as you ovulate. Sometimes, the cyst may rupture and cause pain or discomfort. If you have pain throughout your cycle, you could have endometriosis.
