Could my baby have whooping cough if he was exposed two weeks ago?

Initially symptoms are similar to a common cold, but then progress to significant paroxysms of cough which are notable for an inspiratory "whoop". Symptoms slowly resolve over weeks. The classic illness generally lasts 6-10 weeks. Routine childhood immunization is the best protection. ...Read more

Best way to rid of a chronic "viral" cough that has lasted for 9 weeks? I have been to two doctors who cleared me for whooping cough and any infection

Allergies: This is not likely viral but is very likely allergic. You could start with an over-the-counter allergy medication like Allegra or zyrtec. Use a neti-pot to clean your nose. Drink lots of water. You may need a nasal steroid but you will need to a doctor for that. Good luck! ...Read more

I had two seizures from the whooping cough vaccine as a child. With my first child on the way it's recommended i get it to protect her. Am i able to?

Yes!: In the old days, we gave a whole cell pertussis vaccine which worked well, but had real, though rare side effects like seizures and encephalopathy. The vaccine has since been improved and we give an acellular version now and the side effects rate is much lower. In fact, it is much more likely that your child will suffer from pertussis the disease than have a reaction to the vaccine. ...Read more

Muscley, painless, lump on edge of ribs. About two inches right of sternum. Appeared after whooping cough. X-rays were negative. Size fluctuates.?

Probably nothing but: The normal x-ray just means that it does't have calcification, not that it isn't there. The fact that it fluctuates in size is intriguing. You'll have to go into more detail to explain what maneuver makes it larger or smaller. No diagnosis seems reasonable at the moment. ...Read more

My 3 year old has had a cough only at night in bed for the last two nights, could this be whooping cough? I've had a sore throat for 2 days now too.

Not likely: If his vaccines are current. The cough is of short duration and appears to be contagious, likely a cold. Supportive care to include increased fluid intake, cool mist humidifier, saline drops/sprays, lemon& brown honey etc to relieve symptoms. If nocturnal persists / worsens after 1 to 2 weeks it will be necessary to consider other causes; nocturnal asthma, GE reflux etc. ...Read more
