Call your Dr.: What is her actual temperature? Really hot doesn't mean anything. What medicine did you give her? If she has fever, repeat her tylenol (acetaminophen) every 6 hours. Keep offering her liquids to drink. No more alcohol baths. It can be dangerous. It can cool too rapidly causing shivering that just increases temp. It can also be absorbed and cause alcohol poisoning. Just give plain tepid baths to lower temp. Repeat. ...Read more

The: The best solution in this case is to have your daughter's pediatrician speak with your daughter's father explaining eczema and the drying effects of soap etc., or she can simply write a note to this effect. On another note, if your daughter has a really bad flare up and a bath with aggravate the condition you can simply wash her the areas that are not affected with a wash cloth and sensitive skin soap. This way she will not have to sit in a bath or take a shower. Also maintain good skin hydration with thick emollients like aquaphor or eucerin.
Take care. ...Read more

Interesting report: Burning and tingling are caused by abnormal stimulation of nerve endings, and if constant, can signal nerve damage, and there are multiple causes. Short term symptoms are commonly seen after recirculation after brief period without, such as " leg falling asleep after sitting on a leg, etc." This may just be the sensation of cool feet encountering warm water, or the water may be truly too hot! ...Read more

My daughter has a small rash between her lip and chin most noticeable at bath time! Should I be worried?

Depends on duration: She could have a "lip licker's" dermatitis or a patch of eczema on her lip. There are some people who get rosacea, but that usually is in a different area. Additionally, this could be seborrheic dermatitis- a scaling redness. None of these conditions are harmful, but if it doesn't go away you should bring her in for evaluation. Take a photo with the macro/flower setting & no flash to document. ...Read more

I've been diagnosed with bacterial vaginosis. I've taken baths with my daughter. Could she get it from me from the bathwater or taking a bath with me?

Unlikely to happen: The labia majora of infants keep the vaginal opening functionally closed during most activities. The chances of her getting anything from you are minimal and any material you drain into the bath water is likely inactive within minutes anyway. ...Read more

My daughter is 4 and she can't use any scented soaps. I've always used JJ body wash (bedtime bath) purple bottle. Now she's saying her hands burn.

A few things to try: This could be a contact dermatitis. difficult to say w/o more information. You could try applying a cool compress to see if that soothes the pain. Age / weight appropriate doses or either ibuprofen to help with the pain or Benadryl (diphenhydramine) (if it itches) may help the symptoms as well. If they're red and inflamed, especially on the top of the hands, you could try a 1% hydrocortisone cream as well. ...Read more

My 2 years old daughter has dried blood in her ear. She fell earlier and hit her head. Or coukd if be from cleaning her ears after a bath?

Head injury: I would suggest that you take her to the ER to be evaluated right away. There are several reasons why she might have dried blood from her ear. The most concerning would be the fall on her head causing bleeding into the ear canal from a skull fracture or ruptured eardrum from impact or even a foreign body in her ear. If she is having vomiting, headache, or unusual behavior she needs to be seen. ...Read more

Eczema=atopic: Eczema (atopic dermatitis) is in the same family of conditions as allergies and asthma. It can't be cured but usually can be controlled. It's best managed by using a sensitive skin cleanser, baths every other day, and using a sensitive skin lotion at least 3 times daily, even when the rash isn't there. Cortisone ointment helps, too. If doing this doesn't help enough, she should see her doctor. ...Read more

My daughter got bath gel in her eye while she was showering. She rinsed it out w/cold water, but it hurts and it's red. Is it ok to put sterile eye d?

Yes: Your daughter has irritated the surface of her eye. To resolve her problem she needs to remove the irritant and then let the damage heal. Using eyewash at the time of insult is great. You can follow this by using hot to cold compresses and cold sterile eye drops like artificial tears. It can take several days to heal. It is better to use compresses than to rub it. Best wishes. ...Read more
