Will Nexium (esomeprazole) work in 24 hours like Prilosec ? Prilosec works good but constipates me.which one works faster bec I can't wait 3 days for Nexium (esomeprazole)

No: Both Nexium (esomeprazole) and Prilosec are proton pump inhibitors and very closely related. They take days to weeks to be fully effective. If you need relief in 24 hours you need to take an H2 blocker like Pepcid. If your doctor thinks you need.long term proton pump inhibitor to prevent GERD complications you should discuss with him and not treat yourself. ...Read more

Digestive problems: Well a gastroenterologist is an 'expert' in this field - so hopefully something can get worked out for you to have the full evaluation, which helps direct the best treatment. In the meantime, you could try various things for improvement. I'm a big fan of ginger. I recc ginger tea, ginger candies, anything with ginger. Take ginger root, boil for 10 min, add honey -see if that helps. Feel better! ...Read more

Im 6weeks pregnant and I have terrible acid indigestion. Is it ok to take zantac, (ranitidine) i'm using Tums but they aren't helping!?

Yes: Keep taking the Tums for calcium. Zantac (ranitidine) is pregnancy category b so considered relatively safe during pregnancy. If Zantac (ranitidine) helps, but not enough, you could try Prevacid 24-hr (otc) which is also category b. Safety for either in breast feeding is unknown. ...Read more

Having terrible heartburn..I take 20mg Prilosec prescribed everyday.. Today its not helping. Can i take pepto bismol (bismuth subsalicylate)? I've already taken my prilosec?

Needs an EGD: Persistent heartburn while on Omeprazole (prilosec) or other acid blockers needs further testing. Symptoms may be gastric or duodenal ulcers, h pylori infection, hiatal herna, esophageal erosion or ulcers, tumor causing increased acid production and rarely gastric cancer. Avoid the peptobismal and see your familydoctor. ...Read more

I accidentally took an expired (18 months ago!) Zyrtec pill. Should I take the correct (unexpired) one nowbad well or should I wait 24 hours?

Wait: Medication can lose it's effectiveness past expiration date, but I would not expect it to not be effective at all; especially if only 18 months expired. It will not be harmful at all that you took an expired zyrtec. It will probably still be almost as effective as it was prior to expiration, so I would just wait and take a new one at your normal time the next day. Hope this helps! ...Read more

Prilosec didn't work for me but Zantac (ranitidine) is helping why is that???? I thought Prilosec was supposed to be better

Prilosec didn't work for me but Zantac (ranitidine) is helping why is that???? I thought Prilosec was supposed to be better

Not really...: Like with many medications that fall within the same class or category in terms of what illness they treat, there isn't necessarily a 'better', it's more about what's better for you. Different people respond differently, so all that matters is that it's working for you. Hope that helps! ...Read more

Heartburn for 5 weeks now i took for 20 days nexium (esomeprazole) 20 m once a day didnt work now 2 zantac 150mg a day doesnt help i dont have pain heartburn Only?

Time for a GI: consult. See a Board Certified Gastroenterologist. The Nexium (esomeprazole) should have given you some relief from your heartburn symptoms. It makes me think that something else is causing your symptoms. This could be serious. Also, check in with your regular physician. They can help and suggest a GI specialist. U can check a HealthTap provider list in your area. All the best & Happy New Year ...Read more

Can i take omeprazole and Zantac (ranitidine) extra strength pill together since the omeprazole doesn't work much with my gerd?

Yes, but chk it out: You can use both medications if you need them to control your significant gerd/reflux trouble, but i would advise checking it out with your doc to see why you are having such bad reflux. An infection such as helical pylori causing gastritis/ulcers? Hiatal hernia? Nonulcerative dyspepsia? Minimize alcohol, caffiene, and minty/spicy foods n don't eat before bed. Don't smoke. Consult doc. Good luck. ...Read more
