On 4th pack of birthcontrol pill. Taken cefalexin-antibiotic on 4th to 7th day of pill. Does this affect its effiicacy?
Antibiotics vs BCP: We used to worry about antibiotics decreasing efficacy of birth control pills but it turns out that only Rifampin is really problematic. All others are fine as far as contraception is concerned. Just be sure to finish your course of antibiotics even after beginning to feel better in order to decrease risk for developing resistance. Beware of risk for yeast vaginitis & c difficile diarrhea. ...Read more
On reclipsen bc pills extended cycle.take it around 9 every night.1st pill on my 2nd pack of the extended cycle I took 4 hours late, less effective?
Likely still fine: As long as a woman takes her daily combination birth control pill (such as Reclipsen) within 2-3 hours of the usual time that she takes her pill each day, she will not notice any difference in the effectiveness of the pills. Pregnancy is possible while using birth control pills, but rarely happens, if pills are taken correctly this way. ...Read more
On birth control. Junel fe 1/20. Should I worry about backup method on fluconazole? Took the pill on Tuesday the 19th
Backup method??: Fluconazole is an anti fungal medicine, NOT a birth control medicine! Either you misspelled a word or somebody is misleading you. The BCPs that you are taking have an efficacy of greater than 99% if you follow the directions scrupulously. Their very rare failure is due to women skipping the pill. It doesn't work if you don't take it. Back up includes diaphragm, IUD, foam, condom use, etc. ...Read more

I took a 1G dose of azithromycin on Saturday & started my birth control Aviane on Sunday. Will antibiotic cause the birth control to not work?
Aviane should work: The current thinking is that except for rifampin, other commonly-used antibiotics do not alter the effectiveness of birth control pills such as Aviane. This is likely presuming a person is not sick with vomiting or diarrhea, or some other condition that decreases the absorption of a swallowed pill. Can amoxicilin antibiotics have an effect on the menstrual cycle when taken alongside contraceptive pills? (Late period but not pregnant)
Not the antibiotic: Antibiotics do not affect your period. The amoxicillin did not make your period late. Does taking EC while on bcp change your protection of the bcp for the rest of the pill pack? Took Plan B but never missed a pill & took at same time
No: No, the EC does not effect the effectiveness of the other birth control you were already on and actually if you were already on a hormonal birth control method and were taking it properly every day then there was probably no need to even take the EC as you were already covered by the daily birth control pill you were already taking. So you should be more than fine. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
