How serious is: exophytic T2 hyperintense renal lesion, 6cm x 7cm x 5cm? Kidney is 12cm length. US indicates simple cyst. Some discomfort in abdomen.

Not serious: The kidney cyst is a round pouch of smooth, thin-walled tissue usually filled with fluid. Simple cysts are the most common type. They are not the same thing as polycystic kidney disease, which is progressive and can lead to kidney failure The size of these cysts may also increase with age. They usually do not cause symptoms. If found during an ultrasound or CAT scan they are frequently watched. If necessary they can be aspirated and the space filled with a solution that contains alcohol ...Read more

What is exophytic renal cysts? My husband has one that is measured 8mm. Could it be a precursor to kidney cancer?

What is exophytic renal cysts? My husband has one that is measured 8mm. Could it be a precursor to kidney cancer?

Unlikely: Exophytic renal cysts are simply cysts that extend outside the kidney capsule. You can envision a "pimple" on the surface of the kidney. Endophytic cysts are those that are buried within the kidney cortex. The 8 mm cyst is very small and difficult to characterize on noncontrast imaging. However, such a small lesion without complex features is highly unlikely to be cancerous. May deserve followup. ...Read more

Can a simple kidney cyst change to a complex malignant cyst?

Can a simple kidney cyst change to a complex malignant cyst?

No.: Simple cysts are common and at your age 1 or 2 found in your kidneys are not worrisome. A simple cyst is not cancerous but if injury to that cyst leads to small bleeding within it, it can look "complex", meaning it is not easily distinguished from something more concerning such as cancer. These cysts warrant closer monitoring. Hope this helps! ...Read more
