What is congenital scoliosis?

What is congenital scoliosis?

Type of spine curve: There are multiple reasons for scoliosis &one is known as a congenital type which is when there is a deformity of the bones ( vertebra) of the spine that one is born with & leads to an early curvature of the spine. Some don't need surgery & others do. They tend to not respond to bracing & can be very progressive in terms of a rapidly worsening curve & may be associated with other medical issues.

What can I do about congenital scoliosis?

What can I do about congenital scoliosis?

Orthopedic follow up: Congenital scoliosis should be followed closely by an orthopedic doc that treats scoliosis. The issue is usually that one side of the spine grows faster than the other due to failure of one or more segments to separate or form. It progresses over time as the child grows.

Please explain if it is possible to correct congenital scoliosis thru minimally invasive method?

This depends how: Severe the scoliosis is. If it is mild, postural and bracing can help correct it slightly. However, if it is advanced, there is not much that can be done with minimally invasive procedures.

I'v a 10 yrs. Old daughter who has an s shape congenital scoliosis more than 45*, there was no noticable progress & no pain. What are the options?

Early and often care: Although there has been no progression yet, with your daughter at age 10 and either early in puberty or not even entering puberty yet, now is the time to be very aggressive about monitoring for changes and intervening early. This is not a little 10 degree curve - she is already at 45, and you don't want much progression before you would get agressive with early therapies. See spine doctor often!

Is it true that congenital scoliosis is life threatening?

Not typically: not typically. The two exception to that are if the curve has been allowed to progress to an exceptionally large degree that it effects lung or cardiac function, which is quite rare nowadays. Or two, if the patient has other associated conditions with the scoliosis such as congenital heart or kidney problems which can be seen in a small percentage of cases.

Can surgery be used to treat congenital scoliosis in children? My child was born with congenital scoliosis. Can she have surgery to correct it, or does she have to wait until she's an adult?

.

Talk to MD: You have to find out wether the scoliosis is affecting the child. In severe cases scoliosis can cause pain and interfere with breathing. In minor cases it is detectable on examination, but is not interfering with the patient's lifestyle. If it is the latter case you may not need surgery at all. Talk to your md about options.

What to do if I have minor scoliosis, but severe back pains, how can I relieve the back pain?

What to do if I have minor scoliosis, but severe back pains, how can I relieve the back pain?

Idiopathic scoliosis: Idiopathic (spontaneous without a cause) scoliosis is not a painful condition. Back pain in scoliosis is similar to that of people with a straight spine unless lumbar curves exceed 30-50 degrees and thoracic curves exceed 50-70 degrees. Curve progression occurs with aging by about .5 degree per year. It is not likely to "compress organs" or cause breathing, heart or neurologic probs unless severe.

Dextroconvex 5degree & 7degree levoconvex at L3, both minimal scoliosis.. is swimming as exercise be helpful??? Thanks!!

Dextroconvex 5degree & 7degree levoconvex at L3, both minimal scoliosis.. is swimming as exercise be helpful??? Thanks!!

Yes and no : Swimming is a great exercise in general for core strength, flexibility, and cardio; that being said, exercise will not have any affect on the size of the curve itself. Thankfully, the curves are so small no treatment is required and there is no increased risk of problems with your back than the general population.

What are reasons why swimming is the best exercise for scoliosis?

What are reasons why swimming is the best exercise for scoliosis?

Scoliosis exercise: Scoliosis is a disorder related to the spine. Pressure on the spine will increase the discomfort. That occurs with obesity, and certain exercises. So, weight loss, and exercise that takes pressure off of the back, can be helpful. Also, strengthening the back muscles is helpful with many back problems. Swimming takes all of the pressure off of your joints and is neutral for your back.
