Nerve (Definition)

The brain and spinal cord communicates with what is occurring in the internal organs and limbs by nerve fibers where are like electrical wires with insulation (myelin) and the "copper" (axon). Within brain and spinal cord these nerves connect to other nerves via synapses on both axons and dendrites. A nerve can carry information regarding sensations, and ...Read more

Is traction or acupuncture best for a pinched nerve in lower back?

Is traction or acupuncture best for a pinched nerve in lower back?

Traction/acupuncture: Great question: the real answer is nobody knows. They have never been compared head-to-head in any sort of controlled trial. They are both treatments that can be beneficial and I would suggest doing both of them. Consider epidurals too. When dealing with a pinched nerve, I think the most important thing is to know if there is nerve damage (an EMG will diagnose). If so, surgery is warrante.

I think I have a pinched nerve in lower back. Went to doc, today and got meds. How long until pain stops? I have had severe pain for 5 days now?

I think I have a pinched nerve in lower back. Went to doc, today and got meds. How long until pain stops? I have had severe pain for 5 days now?

Pain will go gradual: pain can linger longer if you have muscle spasm. but either way, don't be surprised if it goes on longer than one week. Recovery and resolution will be quicker if you do everything right- rest, relax the muscle, take pain meds and do gentle range of motion exercises AFTER the pain goes away. The key is not to rush it

Feels like l get a shiver in my thigh. I have a pinched nerve in lower back. Low iron levels. What could be causing this feeling?

Feels like l get a shiver in my thigh. I have a pinched nerve in lower back. Low iron levels. What could be causing this feeling?

Thigh shivers: If these are muscle twitches, localized muscular or superficial nerve irritability is likely. If frequent diffuse muscle twitches or cramps occur, deficiencies of calcium, magnesium and potassium must be ruled out. I don't think it's a symptom of iron deficiency. The pinched low back nerve may be a factor, however. A neurologist could evaluate you for this.

I have a pinched nerve in lower back that causes pain to my right hip. Is it appropriate for me to play basketball or must rest it? Thanks!

I have a pinched nerve in lower back that causes pain to my right hip. Is it appropriate for me to play basketball or must rest it? Thanks!

Most likely, rest: Of course your treating Doctor who knows you and has the imaging reports that can be clinically correlated to your physical exam would be able tell you the best type of activity you can do. Me, over the computer would say that conservatively, I would rest the area, until you get some relief of pain, then follow-up with your Dr. To get an official answer as to a "return to Physical activities."

Can pinched nerve in lower back cause edema? Pain specialist says I have pinched nerve causing low leg issue. But leg has edema (noted by therapist).

Have a full exam: Your pinched lumbar nerve may be part of the picture but so might other issues that may be hiding behind your chronic pain. Have a good full (lab work, too) exam to discover the role other issues might play. Pay some attention to your fluid intake/output amounts to report to the Dr. Endocrine, urology, bariatric, cardiac and other issues can result in swelling symptoms. Exam may lead to treatment.

Neuro said pain in foot coming from pinched nerve in lower back. No leg pain just foot. Hurts to stand but when I lift foot off ground no pain. Back?

Neuro said pain in foot coming from pinched nerve in lower back. No leg pain just foot. Hurts to stand but when I lift foot off ground no pain. Back?

Possible: It is possible that foot pain can come from a pinched nerve in the back. The other possible causes can include problems with the foot itself or a combination of the two. You could potentially see an orthopedic surgeon it a podiatrist to give an opinion about whether there are issues with the foot itself if you did not feel comfortable with what the neurologist was telling you.

Can a pinched nerve on my left side lower back affect my right side?

The cause can: A pinched nerve on one side of the spine is caused by a structural architectural problem, this can be of the disc, the foramen, the facet joint the central canal. When a nerve is pinched on one side, it is not uncommon to have compensatory or associated pain on the other side.

What might I do to get relief from a pinched nerve in my lower back?

Back pain: Often times, conservative treatment such as physical therapy (including strengthening and stretching) and anti-inflammatory medications will work. See a physician if your symptoms do not improve - further treatment options would include spinal injections and even surgery.

It could be possible that a pinched nerve cause sharp pains in lower back?

It could be possible that a pinched nerve cause sharp pains in lower back?

Numb leg: Yes! Sharp pain in a lower extremity due to nerve compression can cause this. Relieve by squatting down to flex the lumbar spine. Usually, anti-inflammatory medications can help, as well as some core strengthening with a flexion-based exercise program. Make sure nothing else is the cause of the leg pain! see a doctor and maybe have a scan performed. U need a diagnosis!

I've get a sharp pain in the middle of my lower back everytime I bend over would that just be a pinched nerve?

I've get a sharp pain in the middle of my lower back everytime I bend over would that just be a pinched nerve?

Maybe not: Central low back pain is most often due to inflammation/arthritis of the disk/joints in the spine or inflammation/injury the soft tissues (muscles/tendons). Occasionally, lumbar nerve root compression can begin as midline pain but this is certainly not the most likely cause.

Can having large heavy breasts cause a pinched nerve to form in your lower back?

Can having large heavy breasts cause a pinched nerve to form in your lower back?

Yes: Having heavy breasts can change your posture and cause stress of the muscles of your low back ; spine. I would suggest that you do a couple of things. Don't buy a bra off the rack. Have someone who specializes in proper fitting of a bra. Secondly see a physiotherapist and/or an osteopathic physician. To rule out any other problem.

Please let me know if there is any help for a pinched nerve in L4 & L5 in lower back?

Please let me know if there is any help for a pinched nerve in L4 & L5 in lower back?

Many options!: However, this is as long as there are not motor deficits (weakness) yet. If there is weakness, it becomes a more important discussion. If no weakness, and stable, then physical therapy should be your first stop. From there, epidural injections can be helpful, as well as medications, including oral steroids acutely can help. Many modalities, including things like acupuncture. Avoid sx until needed.
