Yes: Salt water nasal sprays are helpful for patients with nasal allergies and sinus disease. The thought is that the saline rinse will help "was away" some of the inflammatory mediators and improve one's nasal symptoms. Nasal saline is also a mild decongestant. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Beware!: Otc decongestant sprays such as zicam, afrin, etc (oxymetazoline) can definitely cause rebound congestion typically after 5 to 7 days of use. This condition is called rhinitis medicamentosa, and long-term use of such medications can be difficult to treat. For severe cases, an allergist or ENT physician can recommend weaning protocols in conjunction with proper rhinitis therapy. ...Read more

Having deviated septum surg, turbinate reduc. , sinus balloon dilation. When should I stop taking otc nasal decongestants (benzedrex, etc.) ?
Nasal surgery : You should ask these questions to your surgeon as she/he may have particular preferences. Oral decongestants can be taken up to the day of surgery, if needed. ...Read more
Antihistamine?: If you haven't already tried an antihistamine that might be worth a try. If you've been on antibiotics, it sounds like you've already seen your doctor at least once. After using walgrees saline nasal spray, i still have sinus pressure. Should i switch to afrin nasal spray? I didn't really use the nasal spray often.
Stay away from Afrin (oxymetazoline): Sorry about using brand names but you really want to stay from afrin, neosynephrine (phenylephrine) & similar products. They're fantastic decongestants but quickly lead to rhinitis medicamentosa which is our fancy way of saying you become addicted to them. Check out http://www.Nytimes.Com/2006/03/14/health/14spra.Html sinus pressure is expected w/common cold. Fever & sinus pain is more worrisome for sinus infxn. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Have a deviated nasal septum, don't want surgery.Been causing post nasal drip & bad breath for years, taking nasal spray & antihistamine. Not helping.
Reconsider : A deviated nasal septum can cause a lot of problems. My patients who have the surgery almost all wish they had it done sooner. Get in to see an ENT (maybe get a second opinion). He/she can give you more information pertinent to your case. Bad breathe and nasal drip can be a sign of sinusitis and if so, often needs antibiotics. So, a visit to a good ENT will be worthwhile. ...Read moreSee 6 more doctor answers
