Apart from keeping hypochondriacs and other attention seekers out of gps' offices, what good does quackery do?

Warmth: Some of these practitioners are self-deceived, and all offer warmth, caring, concern, attention, and time that in our dysfunctional health care system, physicians cannot offer so extensively as the charlatans do. It's what keeps them in business. ...Read more

What kind of challenges can I face as a transgender in Thai vs us society?

What kind of challenges can I face as a transgender in Thai vs us society?

Trans* in Thailand: It's complicated. In some ways, Thailand is more accepting of trans* gender persons than other countries, but trans* persons are still often stigmatized. What's more, trans-female identified persons are accepted but trans-male identified persons are rarely spoken of. Can you tell me about your experience in med school and medical practice, the pros and cons of the job, etc. Im in highschool and want to major in med?

Can you tell me about your experience in med school and medical practice, the pros and cons of the job, etc. Im in highschool and want to major in med?

Great Question: People who are interested in medicine often have a tough time learning more about what it takes to be a doctor. Start with your family doctor or ped (call them and let them know you are interested, we are usually happy to talk to people about it) if that is not an option, call the med school closest to you and they can pair you up with a physician or student to answer your questions. Good luck! ...Read more

Looks to me like some independent and assisted living and nursing home centers use amenities to please the families. What are things that matter most?

Looks to me like some independent and assisted living and nursing home centers use amenities to please the families. What are things that matter most?

I agree: Many assisted living and nursing home companies choose to provide amenities to please the family members. It is most important to look at the "guts" of a program specifically whether they've been cited for any major deficiencies, and whether they have a special training program for their staff as well as in-house geriatric psychiatrists and geriatricians. Please look at the recreation therapy prog. ...Read more

My cousin is 14, 4'11'', weights 112 pounds, and chinese. Her parents are slim, 5'6'' and 6'3'' each. What kind of issues should we look for?

As for anyone: These heights and weights are not important in evaluating an individual's health risks. Being tell, short, slender, big-boned, chinese or whatever else won't change the basics. I hope that she's in a family where she'll be encouraged to learn career, lifestyle and interpersonal skills that will be useful in life. I'm glad you care, and best wishes/. ...Read more

Why people follow the leader? For example, gang leaders or head of an organized crime empire like god father? Why do people fear and obey one person?

Why people follow the leader? For example, gang leaders or head of an organized crime empire like god father? Why do people fear and obey one person?

Here's why: One of the saddest facts about human beings is that most of us want to just accept the authority of someone who seems wise and good. It takes away the burden of thinking for ourselves, and makes us feel morally, intellectually and spiritually superior to others. When you choose something to believe in, at least choose something that squares with science ; common decency ; lets you ask questions. ...Read more

Love indian culture and yoga. Can I ask an indian doctor at a us hospital to use some treatments from there to heal me of carsickness?

No: Carsickness is normal. Do you want to be healed of hearing because you don’t like loud noises? You love indian what? Culture? Treatments? Forget deepak chopra: indian mds practice exactly the same medicine as us mds, here or there. And expecting any random indian md to be a fount of knowledge about traditional indian “medicine” is like assuming every mexican doctor plays in a mariachi band. ...Read more

Can you tell me what number of american families are living off of a fast food diet?

Can you tell me what number of american families are living off of a fast food diet?

Why do you ask?: What I can tell you is this. People love to criticize other people's food choices. When we control for obesity and lack of exercise, alcohol and smoking, most supposed benefits of "healthy eating" and especially vegetarianism disappear. Fast food outlets offer low salt low fat options that you may prefer. Government guidance on diet largely political and keeps changing. Stay fit and eat sensibly ...Read more

What are the basic best practices for disease prevention in the workplace? I'm starting a small catering company which will have about 35 employees. As a part of health management, i would like to know if there are guidelines i can put in place to minimiz

As : As you are starting a business, you will have to abide by all sanitary and safety regulations imposed by the government/regulatory bodies. Here are some basic safety rules surrounding sanitation/quality: 1. Practice good hand hygiene. Employees should wash their hands before eating/drinking, after eating/drinking, upon entrace into the kitchen and prior to touching clean utensils, before touching food, upon exit of the kitchen. Establish 'moments' for handwashing consistently. For instance:"always wash hands before entering the kitchen." hand washing is the single most effective way of preventing infection. 2. Do not eat or drink in the kitchen/cooking area. This is a place of work. Raw foods are present and can contaminate the hands. Touching food and ingesting bacteria from raw food can cause food borne illness. Do not allow eating and drinking in the cooking area. 3. Label all containers with content and expiration dates. It is always best to label a container with the "throw away" date. 4. Empy trash cans everyday, unless they are empty. 5. Based on the space, establish a maximum amount of people that can work in the space at a time. Overcrowding can promote contamination or poor hand hygiene. 6. Create duty lists and logs which help you monitor refrigerator tempurature, environmental cleaning/disinfectant accountability, daily check of operating equipment and stocking of supplies. 7. Ensure a fire extinguisher is handy and that employees know how to use it. Also, ensure the employees have an exit route in case of a fire. Hope this is helpful. These are some of the quality guidelines used in the hospital setting. ...Read more
