Yes!: But possible & probable are two different things, not to dash your hopes. Perhaps, rather than focus on winning at the olympics, you can set a goal of personal achievement, say participating in a 1 mile event, then walking a 5k before running a 10k and then moving towards half-marathon & full marathon. Some folks like ultra-marathons. You're a winner just by trying. As nike logo says, just do it! ...Read more

What is the benefit of going for a long run the day after a race or an intense strength/speed workout?

Not for recovery: It is a myth that a recovery workout will help your recover faster. But, some people say still do it because you are pushing yourself when your body is already tired. What are some healthy ways to train to run a marathon in between cross country and track season?

What are some healthy ways to train to run a marathon in between cross country and track season?

Marathon Training: If you are between seasons, you should only run 3 days per week. Make the two shorter runs during the week and a longer run on the weekend. Make the shorter runs total to the distance run in the longer run. For Example, if your long run is 12 miles on Saturday, make the two shorter runs equal to 12 miles. Try to build up the long runs up to one 20 miler, increasing 2 miles per week. Dr Rich Blake ...Read more

Can i burn the same amount of a person jogging if i walk twice the distance but half the phase of the jogger's run?

Can i burn the same amount of a person jogging if i walk twice the distance but half the phase of the jogger's run?

No: There are many factors that go into burning off calories. It depends on weight, the exercise, the duration and intensity and probably genetic factors. They do have a rough average on burning off calories and jogging/running burns more than walking overall. You also have to consider the after affects of running over walking as well. Even after you finish, you are still burning calories as well. ...Read more

I walk on the treadmill every day for an hour at 4.1 mph. I've read that long slow walking leads to weight gain because of muscle loss. Why?

Yes, : Yes, you should report this to your physician right away. If associated with arm swelling and or color changes of the skin you should seek care urgently. Your description is not specific enough to be more precise. A condition known as paget schroeder can occur commonly in young muscular men which leads to venous narrowing and ultimately venous clot. This has been termed effort vein thrombosis and is seen in the dominant upper extremity related to muscular and ligamentous attachments at the first rib and clavicle junction. However clearly there is not enough information to make a diagnosis. If determined by your physician, an ultrasound may be the next step. ...Read more

I run cross country and track distance. Above my age level. I run a lot. Is a doctor on here suggested to look up patella femoral syndrome. Relation?

Runner's Knee: Runnerboy, i hope this helps...As a sports specialist, patellofemoral synd in some form is probably the most common knee problem i see in young athletes, especially runners. Typically it's felt behind the kneecap and is a stabbing pain. A good start would be getting on an icing program, 20 minutes 4-5 xs a day religiously. If it limits sports or there is swelling, see a sports specialist. ...Read more

My bones get weak very quickly during a track work out. Is this due to a lack of vitamins? 18 year old male. In pretty good shape.

Need exam: You may be iron and/or vitamin d deficient simply because these are common; your physician can check and if the former, help determine why. I do not know exactly what you mean by weak bones, but suspect this is muscle pain; if you're keeping up in athletics it is probably not major muscle disease but again a physician's office visit is in order. Good luck. I want to heard others' ideas. ...Read more

So im not sure if i put a new tampon in. I think i got side tracked. I don't feel it.Is it possible to get lost?

Yes: If you forgot that you inserted a tampon you may have inserted another one on top of it. This can push the original tampon behind the cervix. It can be difficult to find. If you notice brown, yellow or foul smelling discharge there is likely a tampon stuck. You can see your gynecologist for a quick exam to see if one is in the vagina. ...Read more
