I think my cough is from GERD because it happens more often when I eat. What causes me to cough? Is my esophagus sensitive from the acid?

Reflux causing cough: Coughing occurs because the gastric contents are refluxed back up the esophagus and spill onto the larynx (voice box) which because irritated and tries to protect your airway by forcefully expelling the irritant out of the lung. Cn eating fast and being anxious whilst eating cause GERD in young adult if been doing for 3 years? Get chest pain/stomach pain bending over after eat

Yes, although it: might not be GERD, just burping (get an MD to look at this). Sounds like anxiety rules your eating habits, so deal with the anxiety. Eating slowly, chewing thoroughly and drinking only a little water with the food will aid digestion, minimize gaseous backlash and stomach/intestinal pain. Enjoy your food as much as possible and see someone about that anxiety. ...Read more

Can GERD cause body aches . ? I have severe GERD anything I eat gives me heart burn my back legs arms and shoulders are achy !

Not likely: I think we are dealing with 2 different conditions. Severe heartburn will need to be addressed with a trial of PPI's- Omeprazole, Pantoprazole, etc and a GERD type of diet. The aches will have to better studied, their timing, relation to activities, etc. Let your doctor know about your symptoms. ...Read more

GERD: is a "finding" by studies (X RAY.....GASTROSCOPY) and may be completely ASYMPTOMATIC!

Thus your pain is NOT explained by GERD but the normal studies should be encouraging!

Report your remaining symptoms to your treating Provider for more ?additional treatment!

Hope this helps!

GERD: Gerd (movement of stomach contents into esophagus) can result from: 1) inappropriate relaxation of lower esophageal sphincter, gastroparesis (sluggish stomach emptying, partial gastric outlet obstruction), ineffective esophageal peristalsis, inadequate salivary production. I've read gerd/heartburn is often caused by low stomach acid and not too much. Is this true or more of a holistic/natural type point of view?

Not true: GERD is caused by contents in the stomach coming up through the esophagus, which in turn has a poorly understood cause. We think it is probably due to too many random openings of the valve. Certain medications can also cause the valve to open, as can stress, obesity, & problems with the stomach emptying to name a few. Hope this helps! ...Read more

Timing : How are you taking the omeprazole? It should be taken on an empty stomach with nothing to eat or drink for at least 30 minutes after. If you aren't taking it this way that can reduce to the effectiveness. Otherwise, you may need to see your doctor or a gastroenterologist. ...Read more

Hiatal hernia: other than GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease)/heartburn, what other effects might it cause? Is it dangerous if left untreated?

Depends: Large hiatal hernias (or paraesophageal) hernias can cause chest pain, difficulty swallowing, and severe anemia from chronic bleeding. Only rarely do they cause life threatening problems such as gangrene. They are however frequently misunderstood as the cause of symptoms, so if a large hiatal or paraesophageal hernia is the diagnosis, see a general or thoracic surgeon with experience in lap repair. ...Read more

Is whitish phlegm being regurgitated consistent with GERD? (No heartburn) Can Pantoprazole become completely ineffective? Can regurgitation cause dried plugged nose in morning?

? GERD???: Have several ?'s. With Gerd you're having stomach contents come back up your esophagus to your throat. It could look a little phlegm to you occasionally but most of the time I would think phlegm would come from chest. Pantoprozole is a Proton Pump Inhibitor. It tells the parietal cells in the stomach stop producing acid. Should not give you dry nose in AM. ...Read more

Irritable bowel is a very common illness and occurs more often in female. Gerd typically causes "heartburn" symptoms and you should get some relief with pepcid/tums/prilosec etc.. If these are new symptoms and treatment above don't help, consult doc. Good luck. ...Read more
