Personal/public Hlth: Mandatory vaccinations prior to school entry were responsible for the largest interval decrease in preventable disease in the country.By 1992 we has reduced whooping cough to 2500 cases/yr and eliminated most polio.Sadly the anti-vaccine movement has led to in excess of 30 whooping cough deaths/yr (2010) and clusters of measles outbreaks.Sad when some forget how bad these diseases are. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
My son is on the right schedule of polio vaccine. He has taken 4 doses IPV.There is a campaign to vaccinate oral polio for all kids.do I need to give?
Hi Doc, I had the following list of immunizations in 2007. Can you explain what these combo immunizations are for separately and am I still current on them for travel internationally? HepA+B1, Ipol, Menactra, MMR, Tdap,Typhoid, HepA+B2, HepA+B3.
It looks like you: completed the series of 3 shots for Hepatitis A and B and a measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) which should not require boosters. Your polio (lpol) should be fine if you had previously received the usual childhood series. Menactra (meningitis) should be fine for a 38 year unless you have special circumstances. Tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis and typhoid may need boosters. See Doc or Travel Clinic. Be safe ...Read more
My 5yrold developed a rash on her upper arm/shoulder where she received 4 vaccinations 2 days ago: DTaP, IPOL, MMR, Varivax. Ok? Apply hydrocortisone?
Little more to say : There were some cases of polio early on (the cutter incident) and mostly theoretical issues with sv40 contamination but the original killed polio vaccine stopped paralytic polio in its tracks. ...Read more

What's your opinion on the HPV vaccination for children entering the seventh grade being mandatory?
Not mandatory: I am not a fan of making this shot a mandatory vaccine, and favor keeping it as a strongly recommended vaccine for all children. This is mainly because its a virus spread through a voluntary action (sexual contact) that affects mainly teens and adults through a consented behavior and not passed to innocent and brief contacts. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Exploding: Most current studies are moving to use of adult derived stem cells, which eliminate the controvery and moral issues of destroying embryos. Mostly new drugs: The newest fibromyalgia information mostly for treatment still remains exercise and a good sleep cycle. We continue to use antidepressants with Cymbalta being used commonly secondary to its pain relief effects. We also now have savella (milnacipran) and I have had mixed results with the drug. Lyrica and Neurontin are also still used for the treatment of the pain. Stay positive and exercise. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

3 dozes of polio vaccine are over for our baby.We are moving to india. They give only opv not ipv in india. What shud I do for booster doze at 4 yrs.
OPV is fine: The OPV was the standard polio vaccine in the US from about 1960 to 1990's and only replaced by the IPV due to the rare Polio cases associated with OPV. (immune compromised patients). It remains a standard for most of the world and promotes immunity to the same strains included in the shot. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Is it safe to take BCG, Polio, Measles, Rubella, Meningitis (Quadrivalent) and Hepatitis B vaccines together on the same day?
Contraversial: Not clear as to why some children and even adults get a variety of reactions following vaccines. Obviously, there is an increased incidence of autoimmune problems worldwide, but this may or may not reflect increased vaccine use. No evidence that taking all together vrs separately will make any substantial ultimate difference, but personally, I am NOT clear regarding ultimate safety. ...Read more
