It is the procedure of stretching a narrowing of the esophagus (both benign conditions like strictures, webs, rings and malignant like cancer). It can be done endoscopic ally or under x-ray guidance.

See answer: Did the GI doc take biopsies of your esophagus to exclude Eosinophilic Esophagitis? If this is absent, then you may have an esophageal muscle issue (dysmotility) especially if you have issues with liquids getting stuck. Talk to your GI doc about getting a barium esophagogram or manometry test. Hope this helps! ...Read more

Unlikely: Based on a literature (pubmed) and google search, I could not find any cases of esophageal dilation causing percarditis. Are you having symptoms of chest pain after dilation? If you are concerned about pericarditis, you should discuss this with your doctor or go to the ER if it is severe. ...Read more

Unlikely...: An abdominal hernia at your epigastrium is an outward bulge of the abdominal wall. The esophagus is quite a bit deeper than that. Express your concern however to the physician who is planning to dilate you, so he can plan his technique accordingly, pinpoint fyi where in your esophagus (in relation to the epigastrium) dilation will be needed, as well as review with you fully the procedure's risks. ...Read more

Hard to say: There are multiple possibilities. It could potentially be more procedure related. It is possible that a person with osteoporosis can have a fracture from a fairly minimal event. I would not hesitate to be seen and examined, which would go a long way in determining the likely cause. ...Read more

Depends on the cause: You may not asked his doctor for more information , most commonly done for esophageal structure , narrowing , for spasm in upper or lower part of esophagus for diverticulum ( out pouching of mucus membrane ) some times for cancer etc. Talk to the doctor will explain to you ( need your husband permission for it ) ...Read more
