I have been taking ssri escitalopram to be exact for an year but now facing problems with short term memory. Can it be because of meds?

Could be from Xanax (alprazolam): Alprazolam is a short acting drug. It has effects on memory similar to alcohol, which is referred to as state dependent learning. Please google that for an explanation. What that means is that when your blood level is high you remember things that you said and did at other times that your blood level was high. Likewise, when your blood level drops you will remember things that you said and did when your blood level was low. It is for this reason that I primarily prefer to prescribe longer acting benzodiazepines such as valium or Clonazepam depending upon the persons primary anxiety diagnosis. Please discuss this possibility with your psychiatrist. Best wishes. ...Read more

I am taking Clonazepam0.5 mg and Escitalopram 5mg. Now a days I am suffering from light Short Term Memory Loss. How to stop it? Pls prescribe me.

Memory loss: Benzodiazepines like Clonazepam can cause short-term memory loss. I suggest talking with the doctor who prescribed you these medicines about this. Dose adjustment or change to another strategy may attenuate this problem. Also, HealthTap doctors do not prescribe medications for patients they have not spoken with or examined. ...Read more

Is nac safe daily to help treat ocd? I read they dose it around 2000mg to around 4800mg for the pill is that safe? (In use together with escitalopram)

Great Question: There has been some data for several years now suggesting N.A.C. as an alternative medicine for treatment-resistant OCD. As there are no formal guidelines on its use, it would be best to find a local psychiatrist who is experienced in OCD TX and especially one comfortable with N.A.C. Lexapro (escitalopram) generally plays well with other medicines, though it is always worth a double check. ...Read more

What are the long term side effect of escitalopram 5mg per day?

See below: Lexapro (escitalopram) 5 mg/day is a low dose. However, if you are sensitive to the side effects of meds, and your liver enzymes metabolize the drug slowly, you may need a lower dose. Some studies have linked ssri use to a loss in bone density. Also, ssris can interfere with the function of platelets in your blood and increase the risk of bleeding, esp. If you take Aspirin or other blood thinners. ...Read more

Are there drug/herb interactions taking 30mg escitalopram, 300 mg modafinil and 400mg rhodiola rosea?

Rhodeola Rosea: I would not recommend the combination, since it has MAO (mono amine oxidase) inhibiting properties, which contraindicates combining it with serotonergic agents such as lexapro, (escitalopram) due to potential for serotonin syndrome. Also, no enough scientific evidence to suggest its use to supplement mood elevation. ...Read more

When I drink too much alcohol I start to shake, is this because of my medication escitalopram?

Sigh: You are on Lexapro (escitalopram) because you are depressed, and you are telling me you are drinking heavily! This is very bad for your depression and your overall health, and doesn't allow your medication to work. Talk to your doctor and get help! You should not be drinking even socially, let alone heavily. The shaking may indeed be a reaction to the combo. I am more concerned about ur drinking than shaking. ...Read more

Why do you have to take escitalopram for at least 6 months?

Escitalopram: Most psychiatrists recommend staying on an antidepressant (such as escitalopram) for at least 6 months to avoid relapse back into depression. If it's only your first episode, you & your doctor could try to taper the medicine at 9-12 months to see how you do. If symptoms return, go back on the medicine for longer. If you've had >1 episode, your need to stay on the medicine could be stronger. ...Read more

Why does the packaging say you have to take escitalopram for at least 6 months?

Relapse is likely: Because once your depression improves, it takes time for your brain's neurotransmitters to readjust. It is a common mistake to discontinue anti depressants once the symptoms improve which often leads to relapse of the depression. I actually recommend a minimum of nine to twelve months of medication after the patient returned to their baseline functioning. ...Read more
