Erlotinib: Technical: inhibitor of the thyrosine kinase activity of egfr. King's english: oral medication in the category of targeted therapies that interferes with the molecular mechanisms that make cancer cells grow. The idea is to cause damage to the cancer cell with minimal collateral damage to normal cells. Currently approved for treatment of lung cancer and pancreatic cancer too if I'm not mistaken. ...Read more
Cancer: Specifically lung cancer, but perhaps others, in which a specific mutation is present. For now it is only used for people with metastatic lung cancer, but some other forms of cancer in which specific activating egfr mutations are present. For those with the proper activating mutations, it is very effective, but the response typically does not last. Tumors evolve the means to adapt to the drug. ...Read more

NSCLC (EGFR mutation):
Lung cancer is broadly divided into two types; (1) non-small cell lung cancer (nsclc) & (2) small cell lung cancer.
When biopsy shows nsclc, pathologists do further testing to determine specific mutations in cancer cells. If the testing shows that cancer cells express epidermal growth factor receptor (egfr), tarceva (erlotinib) maybe indicated for targeted therapy. ...Read more
