Epidural Steroid Injection Causes Anxiety
Would diagnosed depressed person + epidural steroid injection = anxiety increased 10fold + always constricted pupils?
Anxiety Yes: Anxiety definitely increases with steroid medications, whether taken orally like Prednisone or like you have with epidural steroid injection. Generally this symptom will resolve, but may take up to 2-3 weeks to resolve. Consider seeing your pcp to consider options in the meantime. Regarding your pupils, I am unsure. ...Read more

Varies: When done in the right hands, by certified doctors, and epidural injection should not pose undue danger. Working with the neck is somewhat more complex than the low back. Of course anytime you "stick" a needle in anyone anywhere there are risks. The main one always being infection. ...Read more

The injection may need to be repeated more than once. ...Read more

If you give an epidural steroid injection to an athlete, then don't you just increase the chance of more damage by taking away the pain feedback?
Um no: This is a fallacy that I am not sure how it was created but is there. If you injure yourself again likely you feel it even if you get an epidural injection. The steroid is just relieving inflammation, not shutting off all your pain senses. We ask athletes to decrease activity for 1 week to allow the steroid to kick in otherwise your activity will overwhelm its help causing more inflammation. ...Read more

Generally it is used to deliver an anesthetic/enzyme mixture to break up that scar tissue but is also used for mechanical compression to breakup the tissue as well. Generally your pain/spine doctor should discuss when this is a good option for you. ...Read more
Small But Real Risk: Epidural injections are typically very routine, injections done under x-ray guidance without anesthetic. However, they are not without risk (i.e. Recent meningitis outbreak).
