If you give an epidural steroid injection to an athlete, then don't you just increase the chance of more damage by taking away the pain feedback?

If you give an epidural steroid injection to an athlete, then don't you just increase the chance of more damage by taking away the pain feedback?

Um no: This is a fallacy that I am not sure how it was created but is there. If you injure yourself again likely you feel it even if you get an epidural injection. The steroid is just relieving inflammation, not shutting off all your pain senses. We ask athletes to decrease activity for 1 week to allow the steroid to kick in otherwise your activity will overwhelm its help causing more inflammation. Read more

Is RACZ catheter an option when numerous times of epidural steroid injection fails to relieve the pain? Then how many injections before considering RACZ?

Is RACZ catheter an option when numerous times of epidural steroid injection fails to relieve the pain? Then how many injections before considering RACZ?

For Scarring: Racz catheter is used on a procedure called epidural lysis of adhesions which is codespeak for scar tissue, assuming you've had back surgery. Generally it is used to deliver an anesthetic/enzyme mixture to break up that scar tissue but is also used for mechanical compression to breakup the tissue as well. Generally your pain/spine doctor should discuss when this is a good option for you. Read more

What is an epidural steroid injection like?

Small But Real Risk: Epidural injections are typically very routine, injections done under x-ray guidance without anesthetic. However, they are not without risk (i.e. Recent meningitis outbreak). Research shows that esis are effective only for a pinched nerve from herniated disk and correlating symptoms. Absent of both these conditions, there is not proven benefit>inherent risks. Esis have become highly overutilized. Read more
