Environmental Benefits Of Being A Vegetarian
Elusive: The moral benefits are obvious; anyone who's aware of the realities of today's factory farming will see this. A huge british study am j clin nutr in 2009 showed no measurable difference in any major health measure between vegs and omnivores; ped clin na 2009 showcased how easy it is to make your children sick on a vegetarian diet if you do not know exactly what you're doing. YES: One of the advantages vegetarianism is that eating fruits and vegetables tends to make the body more alkaline. Being alkaline helps the liver detox as it requires base to neutralize acids, which it primarily does at night . This is why checking first morning urine ph is the most critical as it shows much reserve is left over (if any). However, one may need a complete protein and B12 supplement. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Yes, but...: There are advantages to eating a diet that minimizes unhealthy saturated fats, but a vegetarian diet does not limit processed goods that contain white sugar and flour and the diet also allows frying of food and trans-fats. So the plant based aspect of the diet is healthy, but not every aspect including excluding wild fish such as salmon rich in omega-3 fatty acids. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Good to know: The big studies have not shown increased longevity or much protection from any of the common cancers or vascular diseases just from vegetarianism / veganism. These people do tend to have other healthy habits. I admire the moral statement against the cruelty of factory farming. If you do not supplement (b12, several others) you will ruin your health -- your physician can guide you. ...Read more
I'm a vegetarian and I'm trying to lose weight and consume more protein. Are there benefits to eating a whole egg as compared to an egg white?
Essential fatty acid: I assume you are an ovovegetarian from the nature of your question (strict vegetarians do not eat eggs). Some believe it has essential (omega-3) fatty acids (EFA), vitamins A,D,&E, & short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) for digestion. Fish is also a good EFA source ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

An even better option is to get with your physician and examine your diet and exercise habits -- fitness activities make friends for you & lifestyle change keeps you lean long-term. ...Read more
Is there a great health benefit to becoming a vegan/vegetarian? My proteins are mostly fish & turkey lunchmeat during weekdays. Don't care for beef.
We're vegetarians, but still eat pretty unhealthy. For the new year my goal is to go vegan (plant based and raw). Please tell me about the benefits.
Benefits unproven: There is much research showing benefits of a vegetarian diet but little research on the additional benefits of a raw vegan diet. Proponents claim it's the best possible diet.It has been shown to often reverse diabetes.I believe eating mostly plants is extremely healthy but don't feel raw is always best for everyone. Make sure to take b12. See my comment for links to some articles on this subject:. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Hard to demonstrate: Despite all the talk and promotion, the really big prospective studies that control for the other healthy habits of vegans / vegetarians have failed to show any benefit in terms of longevity or protection from any major category of illness. Vegetarians need to supplement for vitamin B12 and usually iron, calcium, vitamin D, iodine and some others. Choose based on accurate information. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
