How can enlarged thyroid with throat tightening or throat spasm be treated

How can enlarged thyroid with throat tightening or throat spasm be treated

Goiter: If the thyroid is large it can cause narrowing of the airway and that is an indication for surgery. You should have your thyroid hormone levels checked, if hyper or hypoactive it can be treated. If the hormone level is normal, you should have a cat scan to determine if the gland is narrowing the breathing pipe or trachea. If so surgery may treat your problem. Finally you should look for other causes of shortness of breath including asthma or obstructive sleep apnea. ...Read more

Neck u/s done 4 globus sensation showed borderline enlarged thyroid, suggests underlying thyroiditis. Is it cause of globus? Is serious? Labs normal

Test results: An important part of tests (ultra-sound, etc) is understandable feedback and recommendations - incl "Don't worry". Ask about anything you'd worry about otherwise. Depends on location: The thyroid gland resides at the base of the neck on both sides of the trachea (cartilage-encased breathing tube). The neck lymph nodes that can swell up are typically found under the angle of the jaw, directly under the chin, and along the mid neck (along the carotid arteries). A physical exam or ultrasound exam by your doctor can help you distinguish these possibilities. ...Read more

My Daughter has thyroid enlargement. Sym were Neck bulge & Cough, trouble swallowing, tired. Ultrasound said thyroid enlarged no mass, what causes this?

Several causes.: Enlarger thryoid is called a goiter, and in many countries is caused by lact of iodine in the diet, but that is rare in the US. More likely, since no masses or nodules are seen on ultrasound, it is caused by Graves disease or hyperthyroidism or inflammation of the gland often called Hashimoto's. Blood tests for T3, T4 and antibodies are helpful. See http://www. Mayoclinic. Org/diseases-conditions/goiter/symptoms-causes/dxc-20264595 ...Read more

Inconsistency: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that, your T4 and TSH results do not comport with each other. You should discuss it with the doctor who ordered the tests or see and endocrinologist. ...Read more

All of my ultrasounds/scans came back normal but I have an enlarged thyroid, is that okay?

Probably: Unless the goiter (enlarged thyroid) is very large, it should cause few if any problems. However, something is causing the goiter. In the US, it is usually because the immune system is inappropriately making antibodies that attack a person's own proteins in the thyroid (auto-, or self-directed, immunity). This may cause abnormal thyroid levels in the future, and needs to be checked regularly. ...Read more

Is an enlarged thyroid sometimes a genetic problem?

Rarely: There are rarely pure genetic causes for goiter, like in patients with pendred syndrome and other even more rare conditions.
