Lymph nodes: The lymph nodes usually enlarge as response to an infection in the vicinity.It lasts maximum 2-3 weeks and as the infection goes away (with antibiotics usually) the lymph nodes disappear. Probably benign node: When a mass is palpated in the neck it is usually abnormal and suggests a new, possibly metastatic lesion requiring bx and then therapy. If a hypoechoic mass is noted this is a solid lesion and with above description is a lymph node that is characterized by the fatty hilum. Infection, shingles?: This sounds like a skin infection of some sort. It could be a bacterial infection (e.g. staph, strep, etc) but I'm more suspicious of herpes zoster (shingles).
