I have a swelling in back of tongue, one side. Is it the lingual tonsil? Can you see the tonsils without special equipment? Why would one side swell

See ENT: Although lingual tonsils can enlarge and be felt as a mass at the base of tongue, other conditions need to be ruled out. The anterior tongue can be seen without special equipment, but the base of tongue is sometimes better visualized with fiberoptic nasopharyngoscopy. This is performed by an ent. ...Read more

I have a small raised lesion about 1mm in size on the edge of the tongue next to lingual tonsil. What could it be. Different from look of papillae?

Too small to worry: It is hard to know if a one mm lesion is anything significant. So it should be watched for the next 1 to 2 months for any changes. More than likely it will go away by itself. In the unlikely possibility, it could grow in size which will require a closer monitoring or a possible biopsy to determine its nature. But biopsy is not indicated unless it is >5mm in size. So right now you can relax. ...Read more

Sometimes steroids: One's primary care doctor can check the throat, tongue, and tonsils. It can help relieve symptoms even if it may not speed up recovery time. ...Read more

No ENT in my city Tonsil stone calcified not bothersome but tonsil/tissue seems to be growing over it. Also yellow on lingual tonsil. Problematic?

Gettin'StonedAgain?: It may not be causing a problem now & it may never cause a problem and who knows, that tonsil may be able to bury it deep inside itself, which would be a mixed blessing. But, if with time it starts hurting or leaking or causing bad breath, you'll have to have it tended to at that time. So you might want to get it taken care of sooner than later. One visit to an ENT would probably do it. Worth the drive ...Read more

Had a ct scan showed mild asymmety of the lingual tonsil, of unlikely significance. Should I be concerned about this? Have had brain and breat cance

Not necessarily: CTs are VERY sensitive and pick up all sorts of little things. You probably could have lived your whole life and never known you had a 'lingual tonsil asymmetry' and been just fine. Still, it should be easy enough to check. See an Ear, Nose Throat specialist who can look in your throats and biopsy if necessary. Then you can relax when you confirm it's nothing.. ...Read more

Had a CT of neck after having issues with throat and tongue. Ct resulted in thickened area on tongue by lingual tonsil - what does this mean?

Tissue abnormality: All the ct did was identify an area of your tongue that is larger or thicker than expected. The next step would be to determine if this is causing yoir tongue/throat issues and to decide if a biopsy of the area is needed. A radiologist should read the ct and the area in question visualized if possible to see if the surface tissue looks abnormal. You will likely need to biopsy if it does. ...Read more
