Enlarged Left Atrium
Mildly enlarged left atrium with atrial fibrillation.Should I be worried about the enlarged left atrium? Thank You.
Atrial enlargement &: slowed atrial conduction are classic precursors & setup for atrial fibrillation. AFib is rare without these. Less commonly discussed are atherosclerosis, plaque ruptures & compromises of circulation to atrial muscle, a setup for ?ed atrial function just as it is for ventricular muscle. Thus optimize NMR lipoproteins, HbA1c & Systolic BP, the 3 biggest drivers of atherosclerosis. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
I was diagnosed with mitral regurgitation and enlarged left atrium, now lately i've been getting a lot of chest pain sometimes everyday. What could it be?
Get it checked out: Mitral regurgitation is when the mitral valve leaks blood back into the left atrium. This can definitely cause the left atrium to enlarge. However, this typically doesn't cause pain per se. Shortness of breath, funny heart rhythms, fatigue are all possible symptoms. Some, however, describe things differently. I recommend you get this checked into. Chest pain can also be something serious. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
A recent electrocardiogram revealed an enlarged left atrium. I'm only 25 but heart disease runs in my family. How serious of a condition is this?
Depends: There are 2 question: is the atrium truly enlarged and, if so, is there a reason for it: both can be answered with an echocardiogram. Usual reasons for left atrial enlargement are: hypertension, left ventricular diastolic dysfunction, atrial fibrillation, mitral valve disease, and atrial septal defect. The EKG is very indirect. The echo is much more accurate as it directly measures LA size. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
What are treatments of enlarged left atrium? Normal valves. Healthy 54 yr old male, 25 #s overweight, normal blood pressure, high stress.
Is it a problem?: An enlarged left atrium is a problem if one has an arrhythmia. Then it is important to search for the underlying cause. Sometimes mild elevations of systolic or diastolic blood pressure can cause the heart muscle to become stiff; the left atrial pressure rises, its size increasing. Subtle valve problems, arrhythmias, athleticism and rare genetic problems are others. A cardiologist can help. ...Read more
If you have an echo suggesting that the the left atrium appears small. Is it possible that the heart was originally small within normal limits and that the right atrium may of enlarged making the left atrium appear small? Also, if the ECG also shows point
Echo: I note you list scoliosis has condition you have. Echo appearance is highly beam angle influenced. It is possible you have a normal size L atrium but the beam angles because of the scoliosis make it look small. If everything else is OK, no reason for you to be concerned unless the cardiologist is concerned about the echo. ...Read more
