Try: A Fleet mineral oil enema. hold it in for 30 minutes if possible and lying on your left side with feet on a pillow above your hips. Once cleared, to avoid recurrence, make sure you are drinking 80-100 oz of caffeine free/alcohol free fluid daily.

He might not have: Heard about a new drug Linaclotide for that. Also, if you are on narcotics, fiber won't help but newer drugs like relistor would be very helpful

I've used 3 enemas in 3 days. Pass medium, soft stool each time. I can feel something is still there. What can I do to pass a possible impaction?

Enema: If a dulcolax rectal suppository isn't successful, try a fleets oil retention enema followed by a gentle tap water or regular fleets enema. If no satisfactory evacuation results, your physician can perform a rectal exam to determine whether you need manual disimpaction.

Can an enema cause soften stool, or force it out painfully?

Can an enema cause soften stool, or force it out painfully?

Consideration: The most frequent use of an enema is to relieve constipation or for bowel cleansing before a medical examination or "procedure". With what product and at what frequency are you concerned?

Probably not: No, this sounds fairly normal to me. If you continue to have problems with constipation, pain in the belly, or mucous, see your M.D. However, this does not sound alarming based on recent constipation and use of enema.

Is mucus in stool normal after an enema?

Is mucus in stool normal after an enema?

Mucus on stool: Mucus discharge occurs in up to 50% of patients with irritable bowel syndrome, with or without pain. Mucus may also be produced in response to partial obstruction, chronic constipation, rectal dysfunction, infection, &even from secretory villous tumors of the rectum, among others.

Is it normal for a child to have mucus in stool after using an enema?

Is it normal for a child to have mucus in stool after using an enema?

Perhaps...: Enemas are almost never used in my pediatric practice, so the 1st concern is what triggered the need for an enema? I would never recommend an enema for your child unless specifically ordered by your pediatrician. The type of enema used may have caused the mucous--or perhaps this mucous was due to the irritant effect of whatever made the use of an enema necessary. If bloody, call your doctor now.

Why is there bloody mucus in my stool after an enema? Should I be worried?

Why is there bloody mucus in my stool after an enema? Should I be worried?

Possibly: Blood tinged discharge can be related to trauma from the enema but it should be evaluated with direct visualization (ie. Colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy) to make sure it is not related to proctitis (inflammation) or a polyp or cancer.

Seek help: Encopresis/chronic constipation may indicate an underlying colonic problem that needs evaluation and may be treatable with dietary changes, increased fiber and fluids, stool softeners, scheduling evacuation times, etc..

I tried using an enema just after a stool softener. Is that bad?

I tried using an enema just after a stool softener. Is that bad?

Start simple, but...: First optimize fiber ; h2o intake. Next, docusate helps moisten ; soften hard, dry stools. It is not a true laxative, but facilitates natural defecation, usually within 12 to 72 hours. This is safe ; available for anyone over 2, ;assumes normal GI anatomy without inflammation, stenosis, extrinsic or instrinsic obstruction. But change in bowels is a "red flag" that needs evaluation if persists.

ER: You most likely need to go to an ER where they are set up to handle these messy situations. Sounds like you have a complicated situation and may need some assistance.

I have not had s problem moving my bowels, until two days ago. I am regular with normal stools. In a few instances, I have difficulty eliminating. Today, after an enema I passed hard pebble like stool. Not normal amount. Thisnis rare.?

Bowel change: Since this is a change in your usual bowel pattern, it shouldn't be ignored and a colonoscopy may be in order. Your stools suggest recent constipation and if increasing fluid intake and fiber or Metamucil in your daily diet doesn't get you back to normal regularity, it's important to be evaluated by a gastroenterologist. If you haven't had a screening colonoscopy, this is a good time to get one.

Unlikely: Even though a baby could get dehydrated after an aggressive enema, it is unlikely in this case because your child is well and drinking and eating normally. It is possible that she had a virus infection which might have aggravated the constipation. With or without the enema, she would have developed a fever. Should you need to give enema again, make sure she drinks lots of fluid

Mag Cit and Dr.: If you don't have any major health problems, try a bottle of magnesium citrate - it's in a green bottle usually at the pharmacy - no prescription needed. Drink that down (pour over ice and use a straw) and you'll probably get some relief w/in an hour. Then, get an appointment with your doctor to get a plan for your bowel health - good luck.

What happens if you don't seek medical attention when you have blood in stool after using an enema? Why do you need to seek medical care?

See answer: If you have been constipated and have noted some blood in the stool, the most likely cause at your age is bleeding internal hemorrhoids. If you have persistent blood in the stools you do need to be checked to be sure nothing else is the cause. The following link will discuss the causes for blood in the stool and Rx: http://bit.
