My fecal breath has turned my life to hell. I was seen at GI clinic had upper endoscopy my doctor told me fecal breath isn't from stomach.?

Bad breath is common: Bad breath, or halitosis, is a common complaint. There are many possible causes. An upper endoscopy, like you had, is probably one of the best ways to evaluate. The most common causes are esophageal reflux and gingivitis but a rare condition called Zenker's diverticulum is also a possibility. Since the endoscopy was negative you might try an oral rinse containing hydrogen peroxide. Good luck! ...Read more

Debridement: In addition to all the other excellent suggestions presented here I would recommend 1) brush or scrape the top of your tongue--ask your Dentist for instructions, and 2) class or Water-Pik DAILY to remove the 30% of bacteria and food debris from between your teeth that a toothbrush (should be used 2 FULL minutes by the clock at least 2x/day) cannot reach. ...Read more

Why do an endoscopy?

Many reasons!: Everyone should have a colonoscopy, which is one type of endoscopy, at age 50 (sooner if there is a family history suggesting higher risk for colon cancer). Could an endoscopy detect that I smoke?

Could an endoscopy detect that I smoke?

No: Endoscopy is meant to look at the anatomy of the esophagus, stomach and duodenum (or the colon, using a different kind of scope). Smoking may cause changes in the mucosal lining, including inflammation (gastritis, duodenitis, esophagitis) but these aren't specific to smoking. Smoking is 'detected' by history, smell of tobacco smoke on patients, and sometimes urine cotinine (nicotine's metabolite). ...Read more
