Hormones: The terminology has not really caught up to the research. "Hormone" usually refers to a substance that is made in one cell/organ but then influences another organ, like thyroxine or cortisol. Neurosteroids act locally in the synapse on neurotransmission, so not a hormone by usual definition. But there are a lot of substances that act locally (eg. prostaglandins, cytokines).
