Why do sleep aides (benadryl, ambien, sonata (zaleplon) ,lunesta, prosom, elavil) not work for me?
Yes-with chronic use: Good question. The "z drugs" disrupt sleep less than benzodiazepines but there is evidence that there is some disruption with chronic use that becomes a big problem when people try to stop taking these drugs. See http://www.Mylwi.Com/ehealth-newsletter/why-you-shouldnt-confuse-ambien-use-with-sleep/ & http://weeksmd.Com/2013/04/sleeping-pills-and-death/ & http://bit.Ly/17uogmu for details. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Yes: Actually, Ambien and Lunesta (eszopiclone) are benzodiazepines they have more specific activity for selective receptors directed at sedation, and have a short half life or time in your system, but they affect sleep architecture just like other benzodiazepines or alcohol, just in a milder manner. ...Read more
Moderation: Unisom (doxylamine although sometimes diphenhydramine) over-the-counter sleep aid can help cause drowsiness to help with sleep onset. Sleep hygiene techniques are the first step in getting better sleep. Once you've done that, use in moderation of unisom is generally considered safe in adults only if needed. If you find yourself using it every night or in high doses, see your doctor for more help. ...Read more
What sedatives work best Ambien cr, sonata, (zaleplon) lunesta, rozerem or silenor?I take restoril but doesn't work.I can't sleep unless i take an extra seroquel.
Don't get dependent: Taking more and more sleep meds is a dangerous path. Figure out why you can't sleep; see your primary care md first. Eliminate caffeine; don't exercise too late in the evening; stay away from your cell phone and other bright screens just before going to bed. Don't go to bed until you're sleepy. May need referral to sleep lab. Try to get off all sleep meds. Good luck! ...Read more

Shorter-acting muscle relaxants? Currently taking 1/2 a Soma (carisoprodol) at night for sleep/cervical spondylosis/fibromyalgia-like pain. Tired into daytime.
Try other means 1st: The best sleep is natural sleep. If you're having trouble sleeping, try simple changes: don't go to bed if you're not sleepy, avoid caffeine and alcohol, and don't exercise late in the day. Stay off your computer or phone late in the evening; bright screens can interfere with natural sleep cycles. Try meds only under a doctor's care and for occasional, not daily use. Good luck! ...Read more
Taking 1/2 Soma at night for sleep/muscle spasms. Looking for shorter-acting muscle relax. That won't change natural sleep architecture.Tried flexeril (cyclobenzaprine hcl)?
Talk to your PCP: There are other frequently prescribed muscle relaxants including Flexeril and skelaxin (metaxalone). I generally prefer skelaxin (metaxalone) as it is better tolerated while Flexeril tends to be overly sedating. You should discuss with your primary care physician which medication is right for you. ...Read more

Poor sleep 5+yrs. Had allergies 2nights ago & took benadryl (diphenhydramine). Best sleep in YEARS 2nights in a row. Is benadryl (diphenhydramine) safe as sleep aid? Need restful SLEEP
Very good question: I hear all sorts of marketing claims regarding sleep meds and tendency to preserve various phases of sleep, but not really convinced that any do not disrupt patterns. However, your best bet prescription wise might be lunesta, and otc melatonin would also be relatively appropriate. Drugs such as ambien, sonata, (zaleplon) barbiturates and benzodiazepines all disrupt sleep patterns quite substantially. ...Read more

1/2 soma, melatonin, mobic (meloxicam) & Mucinex taken at bedtime. Have sleep apnea controlled w/ cpap, fibro. Having dreams so vivid I confuse them w/ reality!?
Alcohol?: What you are describing happens when you wake up from rem sleep. Melatonin has nothing to do with it, it is not an fda approved medication, and I am not sure why you are taking it. None of the medications you listed is expected to cause vivid dreams. Alcohol, and certain sleeping pills could do that. Recovering from sleep deprivation (long work nights) can precipitate it. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
