What's the average life expectancy for someone with liver failure?

What's the average life expectancy for someone with liver failure?

Depends: There are 2 main categories of liver failure-- compensated or uncompensated. Compensated means that the liver while profoundly injured, can still perform basic functions. How long a person can live with liver failure depends on the reversibility of the injury and the severity of the injury. This can range from days to several months. Liver transplantation can be curative, in some cases. ...Read more

Prognosis for total kidney and liver failure dyalisis not an option, what type of life expectancy?

Prognosis for total kidney and liver failure dyalisis not an option, what type of life expectancy?

Very poor: Unfortunately very poor however depends on what is meant my "total" failure. If complete kidney failure means not making any urine, then prognosis is typically days, up to 1-2 weeks w/o dialysis. If complete liver failure (your doctor would use prognostic tools such as meld and childs-pugh) and would consider lab values and signs/symptoms of liver failure and typically could be weeks to months. ...Read more

I have graves disease, hepatitis c, and the onset of liver failure which is excruciatingly painful. What is my life expectancy?

See your doctor: I'm sorry to hear of your illnesses. However, your doctor is the best one to ask questions of this nature. S/he knows you and your entire situation, but we on healthtap have never even seen you. Life expectancy is quite variable with hepatitis c, as it can take multiple courses. Stopping alcohol would be a good step for anyone with hepatitis c. ...Read more

End stage liver failure, jaundice, low blood pressure, weak an dizzy. How long could I last like this? Bp has been low for two weeks 74/43

See a hepatologist: Given your history of hepatitis b and c, your liver failure is likely end-stage, meaning that it is not likely you will recover normal liver function. You should see a hepatologist, who is a liver doctor, to see whether any treatment can be given, or whether you are a candidate for a liver transplant. Low blood pressure can exist for several reasons, including infection, kidney or heart causes. ...Read more

I am 5'7", 70 kg male. Taken 2g/day paracetamol for 18 days which I stopped on 31.08.16. Can this dose cause liver failure? LFT normal except sgpt 51.

No: Paracetamol / acetaminophen / "Tylenol" needs to be taken in a single large dose to cause liver trouble. It's the excess at one time that the liver cannot manage without producing a toxic metabolite. Your SGPT being up may just reflect whatever illness led you to take the medication in the first place. ...Read more

Liver transplant: Many of the patients with an end-stage alcoholic liver disease get an orthotopic liver transplants on daily basis. Without transplant, five-year is a maximum survival rate. It is a waiting times until donor organs become available, but sooner you start a process the better it is. Consider transplantation as a potential option and call a transplant center for evaluation asap.
