My Grandmother has been diagnosed with the early stages of Dementia. Is this disease hereditary and if not, what can I do to prevent it?

Incomplete data: Research seems to suggest a genetic contribution but it is of uncertain strength and not to a single or even simple set of genes. Living longer has increased the numbers of people who decline cognitively but causes differ. Some are gradual and easier to deal w/. Some rapid and frightening. Healthy living in all respects is the best prevention-like strategy, but no one knows. If we did, Wow!

Lewy Bodies (Definition)

That are seen inside some brain cell's nucleus. Lewy bodies were described by dr lewy and named after him. You need a microscope to see them. They are found in the brain cells of those with {arkinson's disease and lewy body dementia. They can also be found in other diseases also, ...Read more

Dad with parkinsons/lewy body dementia. Was eating on own, sitting in wheelchair, etc.3 days ago stopped eating, sleeping constant, in bed. Ideas?

I'm sorry about Dad: I trust that you and dad's physicians have discussed his wishes when he can no longer speak for himself. If he has an advance directive, it must be respected. Otherwise, if it is right to look for a cause (vascular, medication effect, metabolic problem), go ahead. It's clear you loved your dad enough to ask us. Many parents are not so fortunate. Cherish what time remains.

Mom, Lewy body dementia, end stage ovarian cancer, hospice will not treat dementia, (moving faster) meds make dementia worse, hospice can not take care?

Hospice have: Differing rules and regulations regarding acceptance of patients. It's difficult for u to plead your case against a big institution. Other options for u is to apply for fmla for urself to help with your mom's care or privately hire an LPN or cna for this purpose. God bless u and ur mom!

What does Lewy body dementia mean?

Type of dementia.: Lewy bodies are a specific type of protein clumps that can accumulate in many places. When they accumulate in the brain, dementia with lewy bodies can occur. It is actually a somewhat common type of neurodegenerative dementia, second only to the more famous alzheimer's disease. If you like, you can look at: www. Lbda. Org for more information.

What symptoms suggest Lewy body dementia?

What symptoms suggest Lewy body dementia?

Clinical Features: Neurodegenerative d/o featuring milder physical parkinsonism than parkinson's disease typically. (slowed movements, stiff/rigid muscles & posture, possibly resting tremor). But with early dementia, often with associated psychosis (visual hallucinations, delusional thoughts), excessive sleepiness, depression/anxiety/apathy, & rbd. Rbd = rem behavior d/o, causing acting-out of dreams in rem sleep.

What predisposes someone to Lewy body dementia?

What predisposes someone to Lewy body dementia?

Lewy Body risk: We don't have a clear answer for this yet. About 10% of cases are a familial variant and are directly inherited from one parent. The rest may be related to a combination of genes and environmental factors. But the main associated brain change (presence of clumps of alpha-synuclein protein) are also seen in other types of dementia, and so the underlying cause may be similar.

Are there medications used to treat Lewy body dementia?

Are there medications used to treat Lewy body dementia?

Yes, brief details:: Dopamine meds for physical parkinsonism: Azilect (mao-b selective inhibitor) & sinemet +/- Comtan (stalevo (carbidopa and levodopa and entacapone) is both together). Tailor rx watching for side effects. Avoid Dopamine agonists (requip xl/mirapex er/neupro)--too side effect prone for lewy body patients. For dementia: namenda, paired with Exelon patch or aricept. For psychosis: seroquel or even clozaril. For excess sleepiness: nuvigil.

Does someone know details about Lewy body dementia? Is it hereditary. Do other family members need checking?

Brain degeneration: The late life dementias are often characterized by the names of the proteins that accumulate. Lewy body dementia is also known as a synucleinopathy because the protein that builds up is called synuclein. When synuclein forms clumps, those clumps are called lewy bodies. There is no genetic test for lewy body disease. The cause is unknown. Lewy bodies in the brainstem cause parkinson's.

Donepezil effectiveness for vascular and Lewy body dementia?

Donepezil effectiveness for vascular and Lewy body dementia?

Helpful in LBD: I routinely use donepezil effectively in my lewy body disease patients. Although only 40-50% of them actually have cognitive improvements in the here & now, but we suspect it slows the progression of cognitive deterioration anecdotally. Can't comment on personal experience with vascular dementia.
