Pros and cons: Atripla is a bit stronger but has more side effects. We use Complera (emtricitabine and rilpivirine and tenofovir) in people whose viral loads are below 100, 000 and whose CD4 counts are above 200. Take Complera (emtricitabine and rilpivirine and tenofovir) with a meal, and don't take it with medications that reduce stomach acid. If you're viral load is higher than that, you could take atripla, though i often prefer stribild, another single-tablet regimen that's better tolerated. ...Read more

Excellent choice: Daily Truvada (emtricitabine and tenofovir) is a good idea if you are at high risk for HIV due to behaviors such as unprotected receptive anal intercourse. But Truvada (emtricitabine and tenofovir) does NOT protect you 100% from HIV. If an HIV positive partner with a high viral load ejaculates into you, there is still a chance that you can become positive. Condoms are still the best protection, and Truvada (emtricitabine and tenofovir) will not protect against other STDs. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Better meds now: There are certainly better regimens now a days than kaletra (lopinavir and ritonavir). In my opinion its a drug for the 80's. Its a large pill burden, associated with diarrhea and causes elevations in cholesterol. Please find a good board certified infectious disease doctor in your area.
