Tough: Poor coughing and swallowing can occur after stroke and increase the risk of aspiration/pneumonia. Options include doing nothing, using thickening agents in feeds or putting in a peg feeding tube to reduce the burden on swallowing. Unfortunately swallowing saliva may still be am issue. Cough: It would be preferable to give ventolin for acute relief of symptoms & to continue beclazone as a controller medication. Lots of fluids!: Extra fluids may help. Make your own cough medicine by using 1 part tea, 1part honey, and l part lemon juice. An "expectorant" is an over-the-counter medication which may help to liquify mucous secretions and make them easier to cough up. Don't give honey to babies under one year old.
