Elimite (permethrin): Hello Vaidehibi. If you are taking Elimite (permethrin) for scabies, it starts to work with that one time application but may require a second application one week later. Also, it can take 2-3 weeks for the bumps and itching to resolve. Over the counter anti-itch creams used as directed can help in the mean time. Also important to eliminate sources of scabies in the home to prevent re-infection. Best wishes. ...Read more

My dermatologist wants me to use the elimite cream on myself and my son again even though we just treated on Wednesday night. Is this safe?
Safe to repeat: Safe to repeat elimite treatment. Make sure you completely cover the skin below head and neck. However itching may continue for 1-2 more weeks after treatment even if mites are killed. ...Read more
One treatment...: ...With elimite, (permethrin) if applied properly, will kill all the mites and eggs immediately. However, the itching can persist for a couple of weeks after the treatment because your skin is still reacting to the infestation. Also, I usually recommend repeating the Elimite (permethrin) treatment a few days after the initial application, to kill any mites you might have missed or any eggs that may have hatched. ...Read more
If I use the elimite (permethrin) cream on my child, how long before she is no longer contagious?
After using elimite (permethrin) how long before scabies goes away? How do you know if new ones will form?
Be patient: The cream should kill the scabies within the first day of treatment. However, the skin disruption is caused by a reaction to the mites burrowing under the skin and leaving its debris in the tunnels. It can take two or more weeks for the skin to settle down and begin healing after initial treatment. If concerned a second treatment after a week could catch any stragglers, but is probably unnecessary. ...Read more

Why do I keep getting new red bumps on my penis even after two elimite (permethrin) treatments seven days apart?
Slept in hotel, woke up later with bites all over me, started to swell and turn red. Got cortisone shot, elimite (permethrin) and prednisone from doctor. How long?
Pretty aggressive treatment so I will assume it was moderate allergic reaction. Inflammation should improve over a period of a 3-5 days with all those steroids. Enclosing a good article. Be sure to check your luggage and clothes worn in that hotel in case you brought home a few "friends". Good luck!
