My husband has elevated liver enzymes and an enlarged spleen. He was bitten by a tick about 4 yrs ago and was treated for Lyme disease with a zpack.?

Needs evaluation: Not all tick bites cause lyme, but if he got lyme a z-pak is not adequate treatment so he likely has chronic lyme. Ticks can also transmit babesia, bartonella, rickettsia & other serious infections. These might be causing his problems & his problems might be unrelated to the bite. He needs a thorough medical evaluation including a doc knowledgeable about lyme & co-infections. See www. Ilads. Org. ...Read more

Liver (Definition)

This organ plays a major role in metabolism and has a number of functions in the body, including glycogen storage, decomposition of red blood cells, plasma protein synthesis, hormone production, and detoxification. It lies below the diaphragm in the abdominal-pelvic region of the abdomen. It produces bile, an alkaline compound which aids in digestion via the emulsification of ...Read more

My Lab results show low white blood cell count & liver enzymes over 1000. Found out I have enlarged spleen and Cholecystitis. What could be the cause?

Liver disease: Cholesystitis doesn't usually cause a low white count, enlarged spleen and severe elevation of liver enzymes. Chronic hepatitis is suggested. It could be viral or autoimmune. A gastroenterologist should be involved in your care, and an abdominal surgeon should be consulted about the inflammation of the gall bladder which may be chronic rather than acute. ...Read more

Is low functioning gallbladder with elevated liver enzymes of AST 77 ALT 142 contributed by a underlying disease? If so what diseases?

Is low functioning gallbladder with elevated liver enzymes of AST 77 ALT 142 contributed by a underlying disease? If so what diseases?

Liver disease: Isolated "low functioning gallbladder" without gallstones would not commonly cause elevation of ast/alt. This could indicated fatty liver condition, hepatitis exposure, medication causing liver inflammation, etc. See your doctor or a gastroenterologist for full liver evaluation. However, if you do have gallstones then that could be a cause of the blood test results. ...Read more

Low haptoglobin 0.24g/l with chronic elevated liver enzymes ALT of 100 AST of 55.Asymptomatic full neg- workup for all liver diseases in a 24 year old?

Monitor this: You need to continue follow-up with your doctor. Pathology may emerge over time, but many patients have slightly elevated lft's like yours, that never amount to any problem. In many cases, fatty infiltration of the liver is identified by ultrasound, and does not progress to actual liver disease. ...Read more

Is it possible to have mildly elevated liver enzymes and some small spots on your liver during an ultrasound and have the two findings be totally unrelated? Could you have non alcoholic fatty liver disease and cysts or something similar?

Yes.: This is in fact common. Both liver cysts and liver enzyme abnormalities are very common. Therefore the overlap of those two is also common. It would be unlikely that a cyst alone would be responsible for liver enzyme elevations. ...Read more

Mildly elevated liver enzymes 2 - 4 x upper limit 60% of tests for 3 years. Now liver enlarged on ultrasound. Episodes of edema and fevers. What now?

Consult hepatologist: Hi, the tests and the clinical symptoms that you describe warrant further work up by an experienced hepatologist. The possibilities are too numerous to discuss in the current setting. The main crux of the w/u would be to assess if the damage to the liver is not irreversible (cirrhosis); find the underlying cause to treat it. A liver biopsy may be indicated if all tests are neg. Hope this helps. ...Read more

Enlarged carotid rhs w/ elevate psv ana speckld pattern (1:40) low titre +ive anti-dna 2.2iu/ml ena panel -tive 24yo elevated liver enzymes causes?

Autoimmune Disorder: The ANA speckled pattern, combined with the anti dna (was it double stranded?), the negative ena, and the elevated lfts, point to a connective tissue disorder (it may be mixed) such as lupus, sjigrens syndrome, scleroderma or poly myosotis. Other more specific tests can rule these in or out. Thyroid disease and chronic viral infections can also be at play. Your doctor will continue the search. ...Read more

Can 'vaping' (e-cigerettes) with nicotine in a propylene glycol solution cause elevated liver enzymes. Not sure if nicotine has an effect on liver? Ty

No: Nicotine has no adverse effect upon the liver unless you had a major overdose which only happens with the administration of large doses of nicotine. These doses cannot be met by smoking or vaping. Propylene glycol won't cause problems either. I would worry about chronic lung damage and nicotine addiction. If your liver enzymes are elevated, your doctor needs to find out the reason. ...Read more

What does having elevated liver enzymes in a child usually mean?

Irritation vs error: A first thought is to make sure the standards being applied to the lab are those for kids in the age group & not adults. Growing kids will have enzyme numbers that are different from adult. If valid for the kids age range, the enzyme numbers usually reflect irritation of the liver cells. This can be stress from a toxic exposure, an infection or metabolic disease. ...Read more

My labs came back with elevated liver enzymes. Should I be worried?

Be proactive: Worrying accomplishes little. You'll get a repeat check off alcohol and meds; if they're still up, you'll get screened for hepatitis b and c, hemochromatosis, wilson's, autoimmunity, and perhaps more. All are manageable but can hurt you badly if missed. You may simply have fat in the liver and end up getting a rx for some serious aerobic fitness. ...Read more

Yes: With any infection, you can get dehydrated ; will have an inflammatory reaction. Dehydration can raise liver enzymes to a small extent. In addition, liver enzymes are involved in the inflammatory reaction so they will go up too. After the infection is resolved, the liver enzymes should go back down within a few days. If you are back to your "normal self" ; the enzymes are still high, see your dr. ...Read more
