Elevated ratio: Hi Oskcar. You lab levels are normal and your ratio is high due to your low creatinine level. If you had a high BUN-creatinine ratio that was abnormal due to dehydration, your serum sodium and chloride would be high. You did not mention those values in your test results. Were they elevated? If not, you need not worry, if they were, ingest more fluids to reduce them and lower your ratio. ...Read more

Tests, tests, tests: Tests results always have to be interpreted in a context. When they measure the temperature of the winner of the Boston Marathon 2 yrs ago it was over106 F. Was he very ill? NO! He had been using his bodies muscles at full output for over 2 hrs straight. The heat generated raised his body temp a lot and he soon cooled off. You hv to talk with yr doc or make a virtual consult. ...Read more

Which etiology results in an elevated bun level with a normal serum creatinine level?

Which etiology results in an elevated bun level with a normal serum creatinine level?

Multiple causes: BUN is a breakdown of ingested protein, but becomes elevated compared to creatine, in cases of increased catabolism (breakdown). Such things as a high protein diet, use of some steroids, some infections, or volume depletion may commonly raise BUN levels. In a hospital setting, tube feeding, tpn, GI bleeding, infections, decreased flow to the kidneys, and use of steroids are frequent contributors. ...Read more

elevated BUN, elevated k+ , elevated chloride, normal creatinine, and decreased Co2. Could this indicate kidney failure?

elevated BUN, elevated k+ , elevated chloride, normal creatinine, and decreased Co2.
Could this indicate kidney failure?

Probably not: I need more information in order to optimally answer your question. However, at a glance, the best indicator of kidney function is creatinine clearance. BUN can be elevated from other processes. I would need to look at the lab report to confirm your impressions. You are too young to have CKD. You should review the labs with the doctor who ordered them. ...Read more

What causes marked bun elevation with normal creatinine?

Co-tango usually: The BUN is usually 10 times the creatinine. When the creatinine goes up, the BUN goes up similarly to roughly keep this proportion, in most kidney disease states. The notable exception is when the creatinine goes up say by 20% to 1.2, but the BUN goes up *5 to 50. This strongly suggests a pre-renal state, commonly dehydration. Mild elevations of BUN with normal creatinines aren't of concern. ...Read more

Stop worrying: Low creatinine is never a health concern. Reference ranges are set so that a few percent of healthies fall outside on either end. The ratio can be up if you're a little thirsty or ate a protein-rich meal lately. ...Read more

Bun: It is common for bun to be mildly elevated and to normalize when the test is repeated. The BUN number can be temporarily increased depending on the body current state of hydration. Try hydrating a little a few hours before your next blood test. ...Read more
