Creatine Kinase (Definition)

Creatine kinase is an enzyme found in muscles throughout the body. There are different subtypes of the enzyme, called isoforms, which predominate in different organs. For instance, the isoform in skeletal muscles is different from that which is most heavily found in the heart muscle. A blood tests detects levels of this in the body, for example if ...Read more

Can a charley horse cause your CPK level to be elevated?

Muscle enzyme: CPK elevations are seen in muscle disease, acute cardiac events, muscle trauma (rhabdomyolysis) but also, in weight lifters, and marathon runners. So, can be rather serious or benign. Perhaps, a severe localized cramp could cause enough muscle trauma to raise the level modestly, but, if significantly up, need to test further and uncover the etiology. ...Read more

Muscle injury: CPK (an old term) is a marker of injury to muscle, be it skeletal, cardiac or smooth muscle. Aldolase is a non-specific marker of tissue injury and does not add any more information. Why did you have the tests done? What were the findings of other tests? ...Read more

What would be some reasons for elevated sed and CPK along with low iron count? Should I be concerned?

What would be some reasons for elevated sed and CPK along with low iron count? Should I be concerned?

Yes: If "low iron count" is a pop term for anemia (low hemoglobin / hematocrit) and/or serum iron itself is low, this is always worrisome and your physician must either continue working you up or give you an explanation and suggested treatment. If you are having muscle pain, an elevated CPK would confirm but not prove a clinical impression of a myositis / rhabdomyolysis & lead to workup. ...Read more

Inflammation: Usually a mildly elevated CPK and sed rate are hallmarks of inflammation somewhere in the body.

Chronic inflammation can also make you prone to being anemic, so get that checked out with some common blood tests. ...Read more

What do elevated CPK levels mean when exercise is not a factor?

What do elevated CPK levels mean when exercise is not a factor?

Muscle or heart: CPK can be released from damaged or inflamed muscles, including the heart muscle. Some muscle diseases that cause weakness and pain in the muscles can elevate cpk, as can any muscle injury (including an injection into the muscle). Heart attacks and other heart muscle injury or inflammation can also raise the cpk. There are tests to determine the source of the cpk. ("fractionation" of cpk). ...Read more
