Elderly With Dementia
Dementia only: Is not a mental health problem, but a physical one. Having said that, many dementia patients also have mental health issues such as depression, hallucinations and behavioral problems. I know of no dementia only mental health units, but there are many geriatric units which are quite capable of helping patients with dementia. ...Read more
Can homeopathy help an elderly with dementia and on peg tube, to clear secretions and with gag reflux? Please, thanks!
Yes, possibly: I answered a question like this before -- it requires an experienced homeopath with astute perception. Family and those familiar with the patient would also need to describe what recent changes they see from his/her baseline. There are remedies which may help the rattling secretions, etc in a palliative way. Finding the exact right one depends on good case-taking & good homeopathic training. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
For an elderly with dementia, to further avoid aspiration pneumonia should we replace the peg tube for a pej one. Is that an option?Consequences? Thx
Yes it is an option: If she is having aspiration while receiving feedings via a peg tube, conversion to j- tube should diminish aspiration from gastric reflux( assuming there is no obstruction distally in the GI tract). If the aspiration is from swallowing, conversion will not help. If her dementia is profound, it may be helpful to discuss both medical and life goals with her physician or ethics board. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

Is anti-retroviral medication often discontinued in elderly dementia patients? If so does disease progress fast or will they die of something else 1st
No: Experienced infectious disease physicians dealing with HIV can construct a cocktail with very few side effects now a days. I almost never discontinue the treatment. Id discontinued, the HIV dementia may worsen and the immune system will deteriorate. No one actually dies of aids..Its opportunistic infections or cancers that arise that cause increased morbidity and mortality. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Elderly dementia male now sleeps 12+ hrs/day. What could this signify? Not walking around as much.
Responses: Presume you are 60 and the "elderly male" is much older. The sleep is in part OK if it is at nite, but not so good if during day. You need to assess if this is due to his medications or even ingestion of alcohol. Dementia progression can result in apathy, withdrawal, loss of mobility, and incontinence. Have your doctor reassess. ...Read more
For symptom relief: Anyone of any age who has dementia can suffer from fearfulness, paranoia, hallucinations, delusions and other psychotic symptoms. Antipsychotic medications can be the most effective way to minimize or eliminate these symptoms and the suffering they cause. Use of any medication for any illness should be preceded by a discussion of risks and benefits. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Elderly male with dementia. While in acute hospital the body would periodically and involuntarily jerk. Causes?
Was occasionally at home place.
Myoclonic jerks: Sounds like he had myoclonus, which, to me, raises question of whether his dementia is due to prion infection, Jakob-Creutzfeldt? Can also have this happen from other causes, including medication. At this point, discuss the significance and need for therapeutic intervention. Wonder if EEG and spinal fluid might clarify issues. ...Read more
Elderly dementia pt being given THC. What would reasons be and what effect will this have on his mind?
NOT RECOMMENDED: I come from the LAND OF MARIJUANA, and cannot recommend THC for a demented patient, and in fact, should be strictly contraindicated, as will make cognition profoundly worse. Have NO CLUE why some self appointed genius thinks an unproven and risky approach will help. Get a second opinion ASAP. ...Read more
Latuda: Latuda is indicated for schizophrenia and bipolar conditions. There are numerous side effects some of which are quite serious. It is not a drug usually used for dementia. I would consult closely with the patient's physician and find out what the indications for this drug are. The patient needs to be monitored closely for side effects. ...Read more
