Although sambucus has been used by many for a remedy for cold, cough amd flu, we don't know the dose for a seven year old child and what long term side effects it may have.
All the studies done have been done outside of us and by the companies who produce and market this product. ...Read more

Will elderberry help if you have a fever blister or make it worse?

Fever blister: Elderberry has been shown to help decrease replication of influenza viruses. But fever blisters are related to a different virus -- herpes simplex type 1. I'm wondering is grapefruit seed extract and/or elderberry safe during pregnancy?

No, they're not: Elderberry so far has insufficient studies of pregnant women using it to determine safety to fetuses. German studies of grapefruit seed extract, have shown 5 out of 6 products to be adulterated with benzethonium chloride, a synthetic antimicrobial often used in cosmetics, as well as the preservatives triclosan and methylparaben. Topical use on nail fungus, etc may be okay, but don't use internally. ...Read more

Can elderberry trigger a false positive on a UA? I am in recovery for alcohol and submit to regular drug/alcohol screening

No: However, some "herbal" remedies aren't what they're labeled to be. It's caveat emptor. One of the very common situations in alcohol recovery is a specimen that sits too long before it's checked -- it'll give a false positive for ethyl glucuronide. Might this have happened? ...Read more

Usually have 1 elderberry gummy a day, right now on an antibiotic for an ear infection, can I continue with the gummies or the elderberry syrup?

Either sounds ok: Very little, if any, research is done on most supplement products sold. That means nobody truly knows what's really in such products, and nobody truly knows the full actions, interactions, and side effects of such products. That said, there should be no noticeable effect of either the gummy or the syrup on a person's antibiotic use or her ear infection. ...Read more

Zoster reactivation: Shingles (herpes zoster) is caused by reactivation of varicella zoster, the chickenpox virus, which lives in your nerve cells.
