What could hand numbness and elbow pain be symptoms of?

Be seen: I would certainly be seen. There are multiple potential causes. Probably the two most common causes are a pinched nerve in the neck or a peripheral nerve entrapment syndrome. A detailed exam and appropriate studies can usually determine the cause. Thank you.

Hand Numbness (Definition)

The term numbness describes an altered sensation that can occur usually from either a neurological or vascular etiology. Some patients that have numbness have a complete inability to sense any object at all, where others may be able to sense but it is reduced. One example is neuropathy, in severe cases patients will be so numb they can not sense even if they step ...Read more

Elbow bursitis: After trauma may take some time to resolve. In the absence of infection, patience is needed. A gentle compressive sleeve or elvow pad may help comress the tissues and avoid repeat trauma but just as long as the skin does not irritated and the elbow does not get stiff. Ice and nsaids work well. For chronic issues an injection with cortisine or for very refractory cases a sclerosing agent may help.

I fell on elbow and was diagnosed with bursitis after an x-ray. There is no swelling and there is improvement after 3 days with motrin/ice. I also have hand numbness and limited functionality. Is it normal?

Could be: A trauma bad enough to cause bursal swelling could also be putting some pressure on the ulnar nerve on the inside of the elbow. This could cause some numbness in the ring and small finger of the hand. Keep up with the Motrin and ice. If numbness does not go away in a few weeks, get it checked out.

Leftside elbow pain/numbness wrist/finger tips numbness, shoulder pain left side of left breast both upper part of back, not all time some?

Pinched nerve: Because patients having cardiac problems can have these symptoms, you should have this ruled out. But the most common cause is an irritation of a nerve in the neck by a bone spur or herniation that can cause pain or numbness that runs down the arm into the hand. An MRI can usually show the cause of the problem if it does not resolve. Thank you for the question.

Elbow pain when leaning on it and bending my elbow and my arm and hand feel numb, I also have hypermobility?

Cubital tunnel: You are putting stress on the ulnar nerve which is commonly called the "funny bone". Pressure or flexing of the elbow will cause it to be irritated and then numbness/tingling down to the hand. Try to get a elbow pad to protect it for a few weeks and it will likely go away.

My right hand is numb tingling in the fingertips with throbing pain up to elbow no numbness anywhere else any ideas?

Hard to say: There are many possible causes, but probably the most common are carpal tunnel syndrome (which is a pinching of the median nerve at the wrist), a pinched nerve in the neck, or a neuropathy. Usually a detailed exam and possibly a nerve conduction test can tell what the diagnosis is and what her options are. Thank you for the question.

Ulnar neuritis: Sounds like you have irritation of the ulnar nerve. It is very sensitive by the inner posterior aspect of your elbow ….:your funny bone…. If you bumped this area or slept on it wrong it could have caused an irritation. Usually gets better with time, rest, avoiding impact. Get it checked if it does not improve.

Complex problem: Spinal stenosis/cerv'l disc degen. Freq. Cause neck pain, but not always. Same w/hand numbness:could be carpal tunnel or from neck, both or neither. PT is often too generic to help. Shoulder surg could play a part in causing hand/arm nerve problems. Strongly rec. Osteopathic eval as specific diagnosis via hands-on exam & gentle manip. May help. Consider neuroprolotherapy for CTS or brachial neuropathies

After my elbow has been bent a long time it's hard to extend, also if I'm laying in bed reading, while my elbow is bent, my hand goes numb?

After my elbow has been bent a long time it's hard to extend, also if I'm laying in bed reading, while my elbow is bent, my hand goes numb?

Cubital tunnel: Everybody has heard of carpal tunnel, but the other commonly compressed nerve in the arm is the ulnar nerve. The ulnar nerve resides in the groove at the back of the elbow and is commonly pinched with prolonged elbow flexion creating numbness in the ring and small finger. For early symptoms the best way to manage is avoid the aggravating positions for the elbow.

Tendinitis, nerve: Stiffness at the elbow after being in one position for a while is often due to lateral or medial epicondylitis or tennis elbow. Try stretching your wrist and take some anti-inflammatory medication and see if that helps. The hand numbness is possibly due to ulnar nerve compression at the elbow. Try not to bend elbow as much, but if it persists get it checked out by a hand surgeon.

I wake up at all hours of the night with my hands numb and tingely and in pain and my elbows hurt. Do you have any clues?

Neuritis: Or irritation/ compression of the nerve. If you sleep with your elbows bent you will stretch your ulnar (funny bone nerve) and you forearm and 4th and 5th finger will fall asleep and be painful. If your thumb and first 2-3 fingers are numb and you wake up shaking them at night might be carpal tunnel.

Can a rotator cuff tear cause arm and hand numbness?

Can a rotator cuff tear cause arm and hand numbness?

Not usually: The shoulder is usually an 'innocent bystander' when it comes to neurologic problems such as numbness and weakness that is found beyond the shoulder in the arm and forearm. The more likely culprit for these complaints is actually nerve compression emanating from the cervical spine.

I am 3 months postpartum and have just recently been experiencing arm and hand numbness. What is causing this?

I am 3 months postpartum and have just recently been experiencing arm and hand numbness. What is causing this?

Hand numbness: Women can develop carpal tunnel during pregnancy or immediately following pregnancy. Consider a carpel tunnel splint at night to see if it helps your symptoms during the day. If the numbness is unremitting or getting worse with time I would seek medical attention.
