10mg elavil (amitriptyline) for sleep/migraines. Have telogen effluvium from it. Doc switched to doxepin. Wont this cousin still cause hair loss?
Hair loss: Causes of hair loss include hormonal issues, local infection, trauma eg from hard hair brushes / hot air blow drying / dyes & chemicals, severe illness (during and months after), poor diet, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, etc. On very rare occasions ordinary medications may be involved, when used at high doses. OTC Biotin, Vitamin D & E, Omega oils orally and Minoxidil lotion topically may help. ...Read more
I take trazodone for sleep make me sleep in 10 min but i dont sleep more then 5h do u think elavil (amitriptyline) make me sleep fast as trazodone and sleep longer?
Trazodone doesn't: usually act this way. It typically takes longer to act, and puts people out longer, with a longer hang over the next morning than Elavil (amitriptyline) or other sleep aids. Elavil (amitriptyline) is another antidepressant in this class, but has a bad reputation for side effects, mostly weight gain (not so for Trazodone). Check with your MD for dosages and also for alternative sleepers... ...Read more
Not take it?: The ongoing use of Amitriptyline likely is disrupting to your sleep architecture. You could try melatonin to try to normalize your rem sleep or talk to you doctor about rozerem (ramelteon). The only other medicines that might help are for dementia or parkinson's disease. I notice you are taking Aripiprazole and mirtazpine and, these are also likely contributing to your rem disturbance. Talk to your md! ...Read more
I was given Elavil to help me sleep. Isn't this an antidepressant? Can I take it as needed to help me sleep? Also I took klonopin (clonazepam) today, still safe?
Combo not good: Amitriptyline in low doses 25 to 100 MG may be used prn for insomnia. Yes it is an antidepressant but requires doses of 3300 to 500 MG for treatment of depression. Combining with clonazepam is risky especially if you have never used one or both before due to possible over sedation or more severe consequence . Clonazepam is not good for insomnia due to rebound ...Read more

On saphris (asenapine) 5mg/night 2wks now, on elavil 100mg/d 1y. Saphris (asenapine) maybe to help w/sleep and anxiety. Carb craving intense after saphris (asenapine). How to stop?
Variety of causes : Antipsychotic compounds such as saphris (asenapine) are linked with weight gain and the causes can be multifactorial ranging from modification of stress response system to Insulin resistance. The best strategy would be to use minimally effective dose of medication and combine it with a regimented exercise (cardio) program. I have insomnia and mild depression. I was just prescribed .5 Klonopin and 10mg Elavil at bed time for sleep and 20 MG Prozac in the morning. My question is, since they are all 3 antidepr. would you suggest i try Klonopin and Elavil first or all 3?
It depends upon: upon several factors, and without knowing more about you it’s hard to say. You may wish to speak to your prescriber and ask these specific questions. Prozac and Elavil are different types of antidepressants, and Klonopin (clonazepam) is a benzodiazepine; none of them are specifically for insomnia, but may cause sedation which may be why you were instructed to take them at night.
