Which tests are recommended after EKG shows heart attack?

Which tests are recommended after EKG shows heart attack?

Depends: We may find surreptitiously in doing ekg that they may be an old heart attack. We work up the heart to find out if there is clogging of arteries or by echo how well the heart is functioning. If it is acute with symptoms and ekg suggestive of heart attack, the person is admitted to the hospital for blood tests and proper treatment by the cardiologist either invasively or by meds. ...Read more

Myocardial Infarction (Definition)

Myocardial Infarction means some of the heart muscle dies because of insufficient oxygen supply. Most often this occurs because the coronary artery is blocked by plaque & clot. Other causes include tears in the artery wall, extremely high oxygen demand (eg, rapid arrhythmia, heart valve disorder, or severe systemic illness.) Prompt treatment can minimize heart damage & ...Read more

Went to doc for palp, bp 128/84 hr70. EKG showed heart attack but doc said it was athletic heart. I workout a lot. Have echo. Why would it show that?

I assume that when: you say the EKG says "heart attack" you mean the computer interpretation of the EKG. The algorithm for interpretation is weighted to favor abnormalities. It is up to the doctor who actually interprets the EKG to provide an accurate diagnosis. In other words the computer is over reading it. Trust your doctor. ECHO will most likely confirm he is right if you have no regional wall motion abnormality. ...Read more

6/2013 I felt weak, dizzy, BP was 80/50. Doc on weekend call thought dehydration. Just had EKG,showed heart attack!Could this have happened last June?

Hard to know.: It is hard to know unless you had EKG or blood tests done last June when you had the symptoms. The EKG finding of heart attack now may tell the age of the heart attack. If it is acute, it willnot be from last year. If it is old, then it is possible. ...Read more

Abnormal EKG shows old heart attack. I am only 25 with no risk factors. I am completely shocked. Did I really have one?

Abnormal EKG shows old heart attack. I am only 25 with no risk factors. I am completely shocked. Did I really have one?

Multiple possibilite: Really need an old ECG to compare too or an echo of heart to see if there is any evidence of scarring or wall motion abnormality. Could be congenital or related to prior trauma. Any family risk factors? Also be aware that drugs like cocaine can cause MI in people with no risk factors. See cardiologist if you want resolution of your concerns ...Read more

Hi went to dr. Did EKG showed prior heart attack. X-ray showed heart normal size. Have echo scheduled. Dies heart size change with heart attack?

Hi went to dr. Did EKG showed prior heart attack. X-ray showed heart normal size. Have echo scheduled. Dies heart size change with heart attack?

Heart Damage: Most silent heart attacks (those that one does not know happened) do not cause too much damage to the heart and many people are fine. But, if the heart is not beating correctly or has to work overtime to accomplish it's functions it can get extra growth or hypertrophy. It sounds like the doctor is doing all of the right testing. ...Read more

Ekg's a week apart show heart attack with thickening on right side of heart. What does this mean?

Ekg's a week apart show heart attack with thickening on right side of heart. What does this mean?

Abnormal: Ekg shows electrical shifts the damaged-heart attacked muscle signal, is reduced. Q waves or flattening of the ekg trace are seen and commented in the report. Thickening is not a usual comment. That would be seen on an echocardiogram more likely. Ventricular hypertrophy and larger signals can be identified by ekg. ...Read more

How serious is an abnormal EKG that shows a possible heart attack and how soon should you see a cardiologist?

How serious is an abnormal EKG that shows a possible heart attack and how soon should you see a cardiologist?

It the ecg is: Consistent with old infarction, the next step is arranging for a myorcardial perfusion stress test and evaluation of the risk factors. This can be done by his internist and there is no need for a cardiologist if you have a competent primary physician. Good luck. ...Read more

A major heart attack would always show up on EKG ?

Not always: For example, with balanced ischemia, the changes in the ekg for one area are balanced by changes in another. But as a general rule, major mi does have significant changes. ...Read more

Would a heart attack usually show up on a 3 lead EKG?

Would a heart attack usually show up on a 3 lead EKG?

It can : A complete ECG is all 12 leads. Having said that a 3 lead ECG can give suspicion to prior injury or infarct, but not confirm for as confidently. Also matters which 3 leads are being traced, contiguous or not so that it would be more or less accurate if it made an anatomic sense. ...Read more

Is it possible to pass a nuclear imaging stress test and the EKG to show you had a mild heart attack in the past?

Is it possible to pass a nuclear imaging stress test and the EKG to show you had a mild heart attack in the past?

Yes: An old heart attack might not show up on the stress test if it was very small. However, some people have and ECG that looks like and old heart attack, but wasn't. This artifact commonly occurs in women. Talk to your doctor to see which is most likely. ...Read more

29 yo having heart attack-like symptoms for a year on and off - heaviness in chest, hard to breathe, numbness in face. Multiple ekgs show nothing.

Panic Attack vs. Oth: If your EKG's are normal, then it is most likely not your heart. Panic attacks can mimic heart attacks to patients and have many of the same symptoms. Anxiety can as well. There are also other potential causes of chest pain or difficulty breathing and so I do recommend you get a diagnosis from your primary care doctor. There are treatments for most of these conditions. ...Read more

How can an EKG show if i’ve had a heart attack? I’ve been having heart problems and my doctor wants to do an ekg. She says it will show if i’ve had a heart attack. How does it do that?

How can an EKG show if i’ve had a heart attack? I’ve been having heart problems and my doctor wants to do an ekg. She says it will show if i’ve had a heart attack. How does it do that?

Electrical signals: The ekg is a sensitive test of the heart's electrical system. Heart attacks damage the muscle which often shows up as abnormal looking signals on the ekg. Of course since it is sensitive, sometimes there are false positives. An abnormal ekg may need to be followed up by further testing. A normal ekg is pretty reliable. ...Read more

Electrocardiogram (Definition)

Electrocardiogram (ecg, ekg) is a print-out of the electrical forces detected by electrodes on the chest wall, as electricity travels through the heart with each heart beat. The electrodes are placed in different positions, and each position "sees" the electrical activity of the heart from its own vantage point. Abnormalities in signal detected at chest surface ...Read more
