Muscle spasm: Could result from poor posture or as you mention, being in the same position por long periods of time. You should try getting up and stretching at regular intervals during your study time, gentle massage and heat may also help relieve your discomfort. Not likely. : This isn't likely from cholesterol. It's likely due to how you're sleeping. You might be in an uncomfortable position when you go to sleep or it might be due to some tension in your muscles that gets relieved by exercise. Exercise loosens up your muscles so you relax, so keep exercising and see if you're sleeping on a firm, comfortable bed. If this persists, see your doctor to get checked out. ...Read more

Otherwise, if you have no contra-indications, heat/ice, nsaids, stretching can all be considered. Whenever returning to exercise after a hiatus, it is extremely important to gradually work into it day by day and to start each workout with a good stretch. Yes: If you have an underlying painful neck condition, i.E degenerative disc disease/pinched nerve/disc bulge; performing aggressive trapezius strengthening exercises can aggravate it. Try and do strengthening exercises with out weights. Consider working with a knowledgable physical therapist to make sure you are doing the appropriate exercises. Neck pain: it is very difficult to pin down exactly where neck pain comes from. To say it comes from uncovertebral hypertrophy at 29 is a stretch. I would recommend a good evaluation from a Rheumatologist. have you had an MRI? pain radiating into the arm suggest possibility of nerve root impingment. you clearly need more evaluation. ...Read more

Depends: It really depends on what the diagnosis is. There are some conditions in which more pain may be expected, such as in rehab for a frozen shoulder. If this just happened & you have not had this before, to you it may seem very worrisome. For now rest ice NSAIDS if you are able, & activity modification.
