Steamline, ssri: Is probably all you need. The difference in treatment for anxiety requires more robust doses than for treatment of depression alone. Effexor (venlafaxine) is an snri; it increases norepinephrine which could be fueling anxiety in the first place. Except in some exceptions, not good practice to combine multiple antidepressants as side effects become more likely. Discuss w/ doc. Hope this helps. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
It depends: On what kind of anxiety you're talking about. Ocd often does require higher-than-antidepressant doses. Generalized anxiety disorder, panic, etc might not. If you're not getting the hoped-for benefit, it can be an ongoing process with your psychiatrist to find an effective regimen. Psychotherapy is an important part of treatment for anxiety, and should be a part of yours if it's not already. ...Read more

All of a sudden I'm reading that anxiety may be caused by EXCESS serotonin! (I'm taking 112.5 Effexor (venlafaxine) for GAD) Is there any validity to these findings
NOT Simple: Serotonin (5HT) is 1 of many neurotransmitters (NTs) in the brain. The effects of too much/ too little NT aren't evident right away. The brain responds to drugs & NTs in complex ways. Low 5HT levels in the hippocampus over time cause depression. But raising 5HT levels right away doesn't reverse depression. You need time for the neurons to make new connections. 5HT in bloodstream causes anxiety. ...Read more
