My girl baby 4yrs. wakes up in sleep with nausea and does not responds verbally. She is able to stand voluntarily and resist us. Vitals, EEG normal.

Likely night terror: By definition, a kid will not awake easily during a night terror and will not remember having one. If you grab, hold, shake etc. You will likely scare them if they wake. Most NT are brief, lasting 5+/- min & the kid settles, awakes later refreshed with no recollection of the event. If a light touch does not waken the kid, it is not a nightmare.Better sleep can usually end the problem. ...Read more

I get a headache whenever I do jumping jacks or jog. MRI and EEG normal. I have migraine disorder, so can jumping exercise aggregate it?

Yes: A number of things occur in your body during exercise that can aggravate headaches. This can include changes in blood pressure, body temperature, and the release of neurotransmitter a such as norepinephrine. Discuss with your neurologist the specific cause of your headaches and whether a modification in your exercise regimen should be done. ...Read more

I have a severe fear of MS. I got EEG (normal), MRI w/contrast (normal), and reflex exam (normal). Im a hypochondriac btw. What should I do?

Glad to hear that: your tests indicate that all is well. Sounds like you are dealing w/a somatform disorder--when our emotional concerns manifest themselves in bodily symptoms. Please try to find a mental health professional for treatment, not just medication. If you have a spiritual belief system, a prudent spiritual leader may also provide perspective. Peace and good health. ...Read more

Diagnosed with migraines (aura). Runs in family. MRI w/contrast normal, optic nerves normal, and EEG normal. Why migraines onset at 25 If genetic?

Propensityis genetic: In many medical conditions, we know that it is possible to inherit an increased risk of developing the condition. Migraine is one such condition. You may never develop it if you are at increased familial risk, or you may develop it at any time. The treatment is the same. ...Read more

A child had 3 febrile seizure started phenobarbital when he's 1yr, after a year of medication no seizure episode and EEG normal. When 2 stop taking PB?

A child had 3 febrile seizure started phenobarbital when he's 1yr, after a year of medication no seizure episode and EEG normal. When 2 stop taking PB?

Under supervision!: Factors you should consider include your child's overall health, his immunization status, how old he was when he had his last seizure and how certain his doctor is that these were truly febrile seizures. If you get the "go ahead", I recommend tapering the PB over 1-2 weeks, while watching out for signs of infection or unusual behavior and being prepared to treat a fever quickly if one develops. ...Read more

Can anxiety cause a numbish feeling in the left side of the face and left arm on and off for almost a week? Had MRI CT and EEG normal

Possibly: Numbness and tingling can be symptoms of anxiety or suppressed anxiety, but i can't be sure about your specific symptoms. If you haven't already done so, see a neurologist first and then consider therapy if indicated. ...Read more

Baby 9 months fits and subdural effusion in frontal, temporal region and mildly dilated ventricular chain.eeg normal csf exam normal milestone delayed?

Baby 9 months fits and subdural effusion in frontal, temporal region and mildly dilated ventricular chain.eeg normal csf exam normal milestone delayed?

Pediatric neuro: Seizures are very common with subdural effusions, effusions, especially blood, can be very irritating to the brain, and the significance of the dilated ventricles is unclear without further history and examination. It sounds like the baby may have been premature and these findings can lead to delay of milestones. Highly recommend seek care from a pediatric neurologist. ...Read more

I started having seizures. Had MRI & CT scan brain. Eeg normal. Continue to have numerous seizures. Have suffered to shoulder pain for some time.

I started having seizures. Had MRI & CT scan brain. Eeg normal. Continue to have numerous seizures. Have suffered to shoulder pain for some time.

2B brutally honest..: Your docs didn't level with you or you're in denial. "functional szs" aka nonepileptic szs or pseudoseizures are psychiatric not neurological. Of course MRI & eeg were normal. You're not having true epileptic seizures. Instead of frankly addressing the underlying psych issue, you're distracting yourself (& others) with "szs." face the real problem squarely & you won't need to act out with szs.. ...Read more

Non-stop facial tics in 5yr old. Ct scan/eeg normal. Constant eye rolling, head jerks & jaw movement. What could this be?

Very unusual: Nonstop is unusual. While people usually think of tourette syndrome, there are other tic disorders of childhood. There is also a postviral syndrome of opsoclonus-myoclonus, which can be seen in other conditions (neuroblastoma). Sounds like the child needs to see a pediatric neurologist. ...Read more

35 yr-old started with paresthesias 4 yrs ago, that generalized to include autonomic symptoms and gastroparesis, looking for effective treatment.....?

Neuro exam?: Interesting case, but I'd like to know about her neuro exam. By the history, her symptoms haven't progressed in a length-dependent manner (especially given the facial sensory involvement) and this points me toward a sensory neuronopathy aka sensory ganglionopathy. These patients would be expected to have proprioceptive impairment-- if she is still a dance instructor, I doubt her proprioception is impaired. If her neuro exam and nerve conduction study are truly normal, I suspect any additional testing will be normal as well. ...Read more

I have had 2 mri's in 3 years and both normal. I have had 2 eeg's - 1 normal and last one abnormal with sharp waves and phase reversal. What do I have?

I have had 2 mri's in 3 years and both normal. I have had 2 eeg's - 1 normal and last one abnormal with sharp waves and phase reversal. What do I have?

It depends: The answer depends on the clinical history (ie what your symptoms are and the clinical course). Every test has a false-positive rate, and eeg probably has a higher rate than most. So if you have a personal history of seizures, then the latest eeg finding may be meaningful. Otherwise it may be a red herring. ...Read more

What is the likelihood of diagnosing a person with seizures if his eeg's are normal?

Epileptologist: Seizure focus can frequently be difficult to localize in some people. Specialists in the neurology field of seizures are called epileptologists. You should seek one of these locally if possible and if not, you may need to seek a teaching hospital at a medical center to find one who specializes in this disorder. ...Read more

Iam have been suffering for fits for 7 yrs.I consulted a neurophysician .He said it is epilepsy. He told to take medicinea for 3yrs.Eeg report normal.

Epilepsy: Since taking seizure medications can have side effects, may require blood monitoring, can be costly etc, you can choose to have a second opinion from another neurologist regarding your normal eeg and history of fits. ...Read more

My mom has these strange "spells" i think they're seizures but her EEG's are normal, what could it be?

Tough to say: Unless we know what the "spells" are it is tough to say or essentially guess. If she is 80 yo, it could be small TIA's, (a type of mini-stroke) she is having for example. Be sure to have her Primary Dr. evaluate her and tell them her exact symptoms and what occurs during these "spells" so they can diagnose her with the most plausible cause. Best wishes. ...Read more
