Edema (Definition)

Fluid in the tissues, either caused by something local to the swollen area like an injury or inflammation, or from the body's retention of water. Gravity brings the fluid to the feet & legs in that case. As a general rule, if one foot is swollen, something is wrong with the foot. Check renal function: You mother needs to go to a nephrologist to see at what level her kidneys work. Her weakness could be a sign of anemia of chronic kidney disease which can be treated with injections to raise her hemoglobin, which will give her more energy. She should also collect her urine for 24 hours to see if she has any significant amount of protein in it. Low levels of protein can cause edema. ...Read more

Is it possible to get edema and fatigue from kidney disease even though you have normal urine and blood tests?

Swelling of Legs: By the time significant edema is occurring in kidney disfunction, tests are highly likely to detect the kidneys as the source. However there are several causes for edema and fatigue, including hypothyroidism, heart or liver problems as well as other less common ailments. If the only evaluation has been urine and blood, and it is normal, look into other causes other than the kidneys themselves. ...Read more

If i have a stage 1 or 2 CKD can my kidneys go back to being a hundred? And can i get a grade + edema if i have stage 1 or 2

If i have a stage 1 or 2 CKD can my kidneys go back to being a hundred? And can i get a grade + edema if i have stage 1 or 2

Complex question: Grade one or two does not suggest severe disease but does implicate some problems. Need to know the cause of the loss of kidney function. If infection it may get better. If you have diabetes it needs very good control. If the edema is new it can be associated with the loss of kidney function if infectious. Follow doctor instruction. May go back to normal dependent on the cause ...Read more

Kidney function at 18%, bad edema, very bad heart, 63...How long can I last without dialysis?

Stating dialysis: It seems as if you may be quite near the initiation of dialysis. Most diabetics start dialysis when they have less than 15% of their kidney function, non-diabetics start when their's is less <10%. You need to see a nephrologist and cardiologist to see if your renal and heart function can be improved to get rid of some of your edema. Ask your doctors for more information on your particular case. ...Read more

I did several tests that ruled out kidney, liver&other issues. But I sometimes have pitting edema(not always) but esp when I stand for long&stress. Why?

I did several tests that ruled out kidney, liver&other issues. But I sometimes have pitting edema(not always) but esp when I stand for long&stress. Why?

Venous insufficiency: Most people will get some swelling of the feet on prolonged standing. If the venous return is less than optimal, more water will accumulate in the dependent parts. Try reducing your salt intake to see if that helps. For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. Practice safe sex. ...Read more

A patient of 65 years has bilateral pedal edema.Everythng is being evaluated.Thyroid n kidney tests n doppler is normal .Tell me further wht to do?

Many possibilities: Some of the most common causes for pedal edema include: excess salt intake, varicose veins, prolonged sitting, certain medications (calcium channel blockers, pioglitazone, steroids). You did not mention if a heart evaluation has been done, as heart failure is also a common cause. Avoiding salt is very important to help decrease pedal edema. ...Read more

Swelling throughout entire body even stomach, liver, kidney, thyriod and heart tests are normal. Drs. Are stumped on the edema, i need help please.?

Hard to tell: There is an entity called benign essential edema. However, this should not extend to whole body swelling. It has no obvious reason and responds to salt restriction and water pills. In view of negative work up, make sure you are not taking a medicine that causes swelling like actos, avandia, (rosiglitazone) and norvasc. Avoid high salt i.e. Bread and rolls, cured and processed meat, pizza, pickles, & fast food. ...Read more
