Had alot of antibiotics this year for illness. Since eating yogurt daily, bm's have been more solid/regular. Can the yogurt be helping?

Probably not: Despite common advice online and elsewhere, there is no evidence that yogurt helps intestinal problems. It does not repopulate missing bacteria; the kinds of bacteria in yogurt do not survive in the intestines. The improvement in your intestinal function probably is just natural recovery from the antibiotic treatment. OTOH, yogurt certainly isn't harmful. If you like it, feel free! ...Read more

Probiotics: Right now, researchers are studying whether probiotics can help fight or prevent infections in the stomach or intestines, including a serious infection called Clostridium difficile (also known as “C diff”). Do probiotics really fight off c diff? Looking at 3d round of antibiotics in 2 months. Also, is a pill form or edible (yogurt, drink) more effective?

Fecal transplant...: May be helpful with refractory c.Diff. Probiotics include: lactobacillus, acidophilus, bifidobacter, sachromyces boulardes, but are not "stand-alone" treatment for c.Diff. Probiotics may provide (in some patients): less gas, regulated bowels, prevent ; most help treat infections (like c.Diff), improve digestion, decrease inflammation. Look into florastor, but definitely talk with your treating doc. ...Read more

How to overcome antibiotic induced diarrhea? Some say eat yogurt others say avoid dairy. What to do? My tummy is unhappy!

Stop the antibiotic: The most obvious suggestion is stop the antibiotic that is causing the diarrhea- easier said than done. The reason for abx induced diarrhea is that the drug kills not just bad germs in your body, but alsosome of the good ones, resulting in gut imbalance of bacteria. Both the suggestions made to you are helpful - the culture in yoghurt has already broken down the lactose so it's ok to eat it. ...Read more

When replenishing good bacteria during/after antibiotics, which is better -- probiotic supplements or increasing intake of yogurt, kefir, etc.?

When replenishing good bacteria during/after antibiotics, which is better -- probiotic supplements or increasing intake of yogurt, kefir, etc.?

Little difference: Probiotics have had a lot of good press in recent years, but scientific proof behind them is weak. Yogurt or kefir probably will have no effect; the bacteria in them do not survive in human intestines. None of these will do any harm, so use whatever works best for you. Even without probiotics, normal bacteria will repopulate your intestines naturally in a few weeks, with no special treatment. ...Read more

Sorry, won't help: Sorry, yogurt or vinegar (apple cider or any other) will not help BV. You need metronidazole or clindamycin by mouth; or maybe try vaginal metronidazole (MetroGel); not as reliable as oral, but usually no side effects. Boric acid vaginal capsules also can be tried. ...Read more

There: There should be no problem taking either of these while also eating yogurt. They should work well and be absorbed well. Some antibiotics are not well absorbed if you take lots of calcium pills at the very same time you take the antibiotics. Keep in mind that although yogurt has calcium in it it is not calcium pills. Take care.

Try not to miss any more pills. And if you are worried eat your yogurt at other times than when you take the pills. It should still be helpful! ...Read more
