Avoid mustard oil: Sesame oil is healthy and fine for cooking. However mustard oil should be avoided. Although it is widely used in asian cooking because of it's pungent taste it is not allowed to be imported into the United States because of concerns that it may have bad effects on the heart (cardiac toxicity). Mustard oil contains erucic acid which is the component felt to be cardio-toxic. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

My boy is 10weeks old. Some of family members suggest me to massage his body 3-4times in a week with mustard oil. Is this hygienic or healthy practice?
Seems healthy but...: This is a traditional ayurvedic practice. I am not an expert on ayurveda but have great respect for it. I am not aware of research on this, so modern science has little to say on this, but it seems safe. However, i would probably only do it twice a week and not use when it is hot out. Bad idea: Nothing you can do at home will help with the scars. Topical benzoyl peroxide in a strength and frequency you can tolerate is your best rx; if you're not clear of new lesions in two weeks, get with your personal physician. If you ended with acne scars because your parents are 'natural healing' buffs, you have my sympathy. Take charge and demand effective treatment. ...Read more

I am becoming vegan and i'd like to know if vegan omegas (flaxseed) and vitamin d2 are good replacements for fish oil and d3.
Flax for some, NO D2: Flax & hemp seed oil are good replacements for many but not all- we need to convert the ala to epa & dha & not everyone does that well. Vegan dha from algae is available. I strongly advise against d2- see http://articles.Mercola.Com/sites/articles/archive/2011/11/30/taking-the-right-type-of-vitamin-d.Aspx vegan d3 is available.Search "plant based vitamin d3."i advise 5000 iu/day in fall & winter. ...Read more
Hi. I've been eating vegan/raw foods for the past 2 1/2 years. But I noticed when I eat cooked foods my stool becomes greasy with an orange oil color.
Orange stool: Orange color stool could be from orange-colored foods or high in beta-carotene or from medications but could also indicate liver or gall bladder dysfunction. It is recommended to consult with a doctor to rule out liver or gallbladder disease especially if symptoms persist or develop worsening symptoms such as but not limited to abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting. ...Read more

Read about a possible link from fish oil to prostate cancer? Should i still take it? Or get DHA from a vegan source? Do u recommend it?
Preliminary: The data in this study were very preliminary. Whether or not the patients were taking fish oil supplements was not even measured in the study (only blood levels of omega-3), so there may be multiple other factors that contribute to this increased risk. For example maybe patients who tend to develop prostate cancer also tend to have higher levels for other reasons. More studies are needed. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
What supplements should be taken for a vegan diet? Taking 1000 mcg b12, 4 grams omega 3 from hemp oil and ground flax and protein from lugumes. Thx.
Minerals & vitamin D: Vegans are likely to become deficient in vitamin D, calcium, iodine, iron, vitamin A, zinc, and iodine. Even if you supplement, the diet is primarily a moral rather than a health-promoting decision; when you control for the fact that vegans have other healthy habits, the claimed benefits mostly vanish. It's your decision and I'm glad you've asked. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
