Infectious : Infectious mononucleosis is caused by the epstein barr virus (ebv) and acute infection usually involves sore throat, fever, enlarged lymph nodes (including the spleen), and tiredness. Different people will have a different severity of mono symptoms - some get very ill, some do not get sick at all. It is spread through saliva and close contact which is why it's been known as the "kissing disease". Since it is a virus, it is not treated with antibiotics. There is a blood test available that can test for mono infection and antibodies. The test will tell you if he has ever had it, if he has it now, or if he had it in the past and is now immune to it - all helpful information. A strep test does not give information about any other infections - just strep. I attached a link for more in-depth information on infectious mono below. ...Read more

Without : Without having the benefit of visualizing this area, it sounds like you may have a mucopyocele of the oropharynx (basically an obstructed and secondarily infected minor salivary gland of the throat). A trial course of appropriatelly directed antibiotics and office-based marsupialization of the cyst ( basically an i & d) may be of benefit. A general rule of thumb is persistent sore throats not improving over several weeks should be checked out. Its also possible you may have a small peritonsillar abscess or peritonsillitis with tonsillolith fomation. One wouldn't know without looking. ...Read more

Yep: New onset sore throat, with redness, discolored patches needs to be evaluated for strep throat. If a rapid strep test is negative, ask for a throat culture, Since 1 to 3 out of 10 rapid strep tests have false negatives & strep is missed. As long as strep is treated within 10 days the risk of acquiring rheumatic fever is minimal. So go to an UC today or see doc tomorrow. Now if had for 10 days. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
